    Hi

Youtube is telling me that my old Firefox 2 browser I have on this linpus lite machine will soon be un-supported. To be honest I feel very daunted by the Firefox 2 Upgrade stuff I have seen on here, I've never gone into Terminal to do anything and am scared I will permanently disable my internet if I make a little mistake.

So I figured I'd install a different browser alongside it and leave it there as a safety measure, hopefully a browser that will autoupdate itself without me having to dabble with scary linux commands, something like Opera or Safari I guess.

    Any help of recommendations appreciated!

You should be fine, hit alt+f2 type "xterm" without quotes hit enter, then cut and paste the lines separately onto the command line. You will have to press ctrl+shift+v to paste into the terminal.

if you have the 8gb sd then use this first. It backs up your entire system on an 8gb pendrive so you can break it as many times as you like and have it back to rights in fifteen mins.

    OK,

Figured out the terminal thing - you have to click run in terminal! rather than in the local host window thing - explains why I couldn't cut and paste.

Anyway, got the terminal window open, pasted in the first command of the two from Macles, hit return, and nothing seemed to happen at all. I was expecting some sort of download window to open up and show the progress of the download. I thought best not to do anything further (do you have to enter the second command as well before anything happens?) without assistance.

    Much appreciated.

the first line downloads the file and, as the script says, the second line unpacks it and installs it to the opt directory. The download sequence will look Something like this

    darryl@darryl-desktop:~$ wget -N "http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-3.6&os=linux&lang=en-US"

cut and paste from the macles page one line at a time. It has been known for this link to be a little quirky, one day it didn't work for me, the next day it did for whatever reason....

Hmmm, interesting. Nothing happened at all though, no connection refused or anything.

I notice activating the xterm command with run in terminal ticked opens two windows, one as terminal with "edit, file" etc across the top, and a smaller local host one, with a sort of cube logo at the top.

Which window should I be typing the commands into?

    Sorry I'm such an idiot!

    Hey guys!

We have a partial success, I used a post below (THANKS!) to successfully install Flash 10 by the look of things, ITV player now works for the IPL cricket anyway! However, the opera installation failed, not sure what I did wrong. It certainly downloaded, but the second install but obviously failed - nothing was obviously wrong in terminal, but when I restarted the machine, no sign of even a low res opera icon anywhere. Luckily Firefox 2 still works, but now youtube has failed completely - says install missing plugin, but nothing to install.

I notice in the directory, Flash is in my downloads, but Opera isn't. So no idea where it is!

    Help still needed

Also, I didn't type xterm, I typed in terminal as seen in the flash 10 install as that seemed to work.

Thanks for the help - I found that I had done it though - entering the command 'opera' into alt F2 command prompt started the browser and it works like a charm!
