Hello all, I have a Acer Aspire One and recently signed up with Optus wireless. But after doing so found that I cannot get it connected because the operating system is Linux. Any ideas please.

If you have not done this already, I think your first task is to bring your computer up-to-date with a wired connection.

    HiJapser
Thank you for the advise. But how do you do that?

To be honest: I don't know.
    ( I don't have a 'One', I only made 3G working on it for my neighbour )
It should be a good subject for a new thread, since the search-function gives so many and confusing answers.

Btw, there is a 3G subforum under Networking.

Since I don't know WHAT the "optus wireless broadband" is, can you do the following steps?

    First, plug in the device.
Then, use ALT-F2, enter "terminal" and the "enter" key.
Issue the command "lsusb" (followed by "enter", of course).
    Post the results.
Next, type "ls /dev/ttyUSB*" and post the results of that.

That will tell us what kind of USB device it is, and how to proceed. (I assume that the device does NOT plug into the ethernet port -- if it does, it wouldn't require ANY setup to operate. In fact, you may inquire about the availability of such a device. The only disadvantage would be that it couldn't be "self-powered", and would require the use of a power adapter).

    Hi fweigel,

I'm having the same problem, getting Linux Linpus to recognise the Optus 3g modem (Optus is an Australian 3g provider). Here are the results for those terminal inputs:

    "lsusb":

    Bus 005 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
    Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
    Bus 003 Device 002: ID I2d1:1003 Huawei E220 3g modem
    Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
    Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0c45:62c0 Acer Crystal Eye Webcam
    Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

    and for "ls /dev/ttyUSB*":

    /dev/ttyUSB0 /dev/ttyUSB1

Any help would be appreciated! There are a few guides to this online but they haven't worked for me. I was following one which got the Acer to recognise the modem, then using wvdial to connect through the terminal, but it won't connect to the Optus Australia network. that guide's here - http://linux.com/archive/forums/topic/2807?startnum=1

    Any ideas? Cheers
