TuxType2 is an educational typing tutor for children using the linux penguin "Tux."

    1. Obtain tuxtype2-1.5.17-1.fc8.i386.rpm from
    ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/fedora/updates/testing/8/i386.newkey/tuxtype2-1.5.17-1.fc8.i386.rpm or http://download.fedora.redhat.com/p...ting/8/i386.newkey/tuxtype2-1.5.17-1.fc8.i386

    2. A dialog box will open (using Firefox 2). Choose "open with software installer"

    3. If using Firefox 2, open again with software installer when finished downloading (enter your system password if prompted). (It is important to use the software installer because it will automatically check dependencies.)

    4. If you get a dialog box showing a warning, click on "details" and, if the only warning is that the public key is not installed, install without verifying key. The key might be found at http://rpmfind.net//linux/RPM/fedora/updates/testing/8/i386/tuxtype2-1.5.17-1.fc8.i386.html and might be 71d41fc9efe33cd710d18a92e3cb294b (shown as "internal MD5 on that page, which sometimes gives me a 404 error.)

    5. After a successful installation, you can run TuxType2 by right-clicking on the desktop. It will show up under "Games." Verify that it runs correctly.

    6. To add an icon under "Games" on the desktop, edit group-app.xml by entering in a terminal (Alt-F2 then terminal then run):
"sudo mousepad /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/group-app.xml" (group-app.xml may be in another directory if you have done certain updates - search this forum for group-app.xml for more details)

    7. Enter [tab]<app sequence="13">/usr/share/applications/fedora-tuxtype2.desktop</app>
on third line from bottom in game (last) section right after the entry for sequence 12.

(P.S. Using the package manager (right-click on the desktop "System" then "Add/Remove Software") to install TuxType2 (found under "Applications/Educational Software") downloads tuxtype2-1.5.3-2.fc6.i386 and gave me a "segmentation fault" error. The version above is newer.)

    Upgrading TuxType2

TuxType2 is an educational typing tutor for children using the linux penguin "Tux."

    1. Obtain tuxtype2-1.5.17-1.fc8.i386.rpm from
    ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/fedora/updates/ ... 8.i386.rpm or http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/f ... 1.fc8.i386

    5. After a successful installation, you can run TuxType2 by right-clicking on the desktop. It will show up under "Games." Verify that it runs correctly.

    6. To add an icon under "Games" on the desktop, edit group-app.xml by entering in a terminal (Alt-F2 then terminal then run): "sudo mousepad /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/group-app.xml" (group-app.xml may be in another directory if you have done certain updates - search this forum for group-app.xml for more details)

    7. Enter [tab]<app sequence="13">/usr/share/applications/fedora-tuxtype2.desktop</app> on third line from bottom in game (last) section right after the entry for sequence 12.

(P.S. Using the package manager (right-click on the desktop "System" then "Add/Remove Software") to install TuxType2 (found under "Applications/Educational Software") downloads tuxtype2-1.5.3-2.fc6.i386 and gave me a "segmentation fault" error. The version above is newer.)

    Upgrading to version 1.7.4

    1. FIRST, UNINSTALL version 1.5.17 by using the package manager (right-click on the desktop "System" then "Add/Remove Software"). Click the tab at the top labeled "List." Scroll through the list to "tuxtype2 - 1.5.17-1.fc8.i386" and UNCHECK the box next to it. Then click the box at the bottom right labeled "Apply." The old version will then be uninstalled and dependencies checked.

    2. Obtain tuxtype-1.7.4-11.1.i386.rpm by going to http://software.opensuse.org/search and searching for "tuxtype" under Fedora 9. Click on the highlighted link labeled "tuxtype-1.7.4-11.1.i386.rpm" under "Manual Package Download" in the first box labeled "Education/Fedora-9" and by "i386" in bold.

    3. Then follow instructions 2 through 4 above.

    4. Follow instruction 5 above, but "Tux Typing" will show up under "Education" instead of "Games."

    5. To edit or add an icon under "Games" on the desktop, follow instructions 6 and 7 above. However, in instruction 7, change or add (as appropriate) "/usr/share/applications/openSUSE-Education-tuxtype.desktop" instead of "/usr/share/applications/fedora-tuxtype2.desktop" as shown in step 7 above. Don't forget to leave or add "</app>" as shown in step 7. Be careful in that the File Manager will NOT show the file name properly. It will only show "Tux Typing." You must go into terminal and go to the /usr/share/applications directory to see the actual name of the file that loads Tux Typing.

    6. The package manager will NOT show version 1.7.4 of Tux Typing as available prior to installation.
