I am trying to install a vLite copy of Windows 7. I have been able to trim it down to about 1.3 gigs. I am pretty much an expert creating and booting from a USB as I have installed XP on both the Asus 3E with 2gig SSD and I have installed XP on the AAO with 8gig SSD. I have also installed various versions of Linux with a USB. That is not an issue.

I am trying to install trimmed version of Windows 7. Using vLite I have been able to get it down to 1.3 gigs. The problem I have is the install it will go through the entire install process and when it gets to the last step I get an error message saying it cannot install to the drive, not enough room.

I have read several post and various forums/blogs and have seen where some people have been successful in getting Windows 7 to install on the AAO version with the 8gig SSD. How? What am I missing here. I know that Windows 7 is pretty large but I would think that even when windows expands that 7.5 gigs of space should be enough...

Has anyone had success with this install.... if so how? :? :

I installed Win7 on my 8gb SSD via cd using a usb burner. No probs whatsoever. Sure it takes up most of the drive (about 1gb free after tweaks), but I use a 16gb sdhc card for everything else.

My suggestion is to try it without vlite.

I had some issues around that, but when i switched to innstalling from a USB HDD it worked like a charm.
At first i got that, i found out i had been trying to innstall it on the leftover partition after my Win XP innstalation.
But im sure that you with all your practice did not do the same mistake as i did ^^
(I innstalled without using vLite, also with two 16GB sdhc cards)

So how does it run on the 8 gig SSD version? Is it workable? And I would assume you guys have expanded the internal memory, right?

It runs quite well, with expanded memory ofcourse. Without expanding i think you would run ot of memory pretty fast while multitasking.
I did not try to install vista, but it is much faster than Win XP. (Without tweaks)

Just finish installing Windows 7 7000 beta on 8g SSD AAO. The only problem is after the installation, there is only 400K left in C drive.
I turned off the hibernation and it now has 1.6g left. I used standard installation without any Winlite or splitstream. Wi-Fi and Sound work flawlessly.
I have to verify if webcam works but there is an application for me to test yet. The speed is ok but it takes time to boot and shutdown.

I hit a brick wall trying to install w7 from a USB. I could not even get past the initial install screen  . I formatted the SSD to max out my space and end up with W7 telling me I needed 8.7 gb of free space to install. I installed eeebuntu 2.0 standard and have not tried W7 again, yet. Now I have had no problems installing W7 on my two other laptops but I ran those from internal DVD roms.

To make matters worse, i tried to reinstall via extrenal usb cdrom and my recovery software is broke  ! Bestbuy open box special, the computer is great, the software recovery disc are shot. I am cloning the dvd right now and am @ 92% with elapsed time of 3:22 minutes. Anyways, just a note to say your not alone. I am going to look for the vlite version you mentioned about and try that out.

Let me know when you succeed.
