I've searched the forums over, but I haven't found an answer!
I bought a Pink 160/1g running Windows XP from Office Depot. I actually traded out the 120 for the same price. I did this because I can't get Windows OneCare to download on my machine. I've tried all the HELP functions and can't get an answer.
It pretty much stalls out when I get to the install part. I tell it English is the language, then Yes I agree with the rules, and then it shows the download/install box with the time to complete at the bottom. Well, it puts about 1 green block on the download part then gives me an error. SO, I've searched the error code and can come up with no help.
    WHAT am I missing??

Don't know, but given you're about to pay $50 you might be interested in this: http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/pres ... ityPR.mspx

The best non-free security suite going this year is Norton's Internet Security 2009 - I'm not sure MS is very enthusiastic about its own product, given the above release.

    Thank you for the information.

I am already a subscriber to OneCare. I can have 3 computers on my subscription. My One is the 3rd computer. I just can't get it to work, I guess.

If anybody finds out anything else, let me know!!
    THANKS!

OH, the error id: 0017-80072EE2 I'm going to keep looking!

Your time is worth money, too. If you're interested in some free ones that are effective and light on resources (google to confirm their reps) I'd suggest Avira AntiVir and the Zonealarm Free firewall. (the Avira has a nuisance nag screen but there's a simple fix to stop it.) AVG is also free and good but more resources. Would tide you over until MS releases its new solution. Good luck.

Got back online by calling a techie...he went in a fixed the issue. NO CLUE what was wrong but it had to do w/ the .NET Framework.

A lot of MS stuff needs .NET but usually the installer alerts you to the download for that. Glad you're fixed.

Good grief!! Why would anyone continue to overpay Microshaft for any more of their sometimes works, sometimes doesn't software? For many years I have run the free versions of AVG Anti virus, Sygate Firewall, coupled with Ccleaner, Advanced System Care, and Free RAM XP Pro. I have tried, at one time or another, ALL the other products out there including paid versions of McCafey, Norton and Kasperskey. Also used Zone Alarm (too many "rules") and a few other firewalls. Once and ONLY once did a very malicious virus-worm-root kit get by my AVG. I downloaded the 30 day free trial of Norton, it took care of the problem and I promptly got rid of it again. Norton is a system/resource hog and it gets it's fingers into EVERY part of your OS and system, and is HORRIBLE to try and get completely uninstalled. That and the fact that you have to pay a yearly subscription of $39.95 EVERY year for it makes it my "use only in an emergency" anti-virus program. I have not read good things about "One Care". I think it might be a re-do of the program they bought out from another company and the loglo was a bulls-eye target. I tried that one also, when MS first bought it and branded it as theirs and wasn't impressed. That was a couple of years ago. Buyer beware!

These applications all change year to year, there is always something wrong with each of them. MS is making some good moves lately, and its new security might be right up there. Norton was terrible, but started improving in 2007 and the 2009 (both NAV and Internet Security) is really elegant and lighter on resources than anything else - lots of independent reviews agree. (My only complaint is a big toolbar for the password protection and site checking icons, where those should have been set out of the way on the status bar - I've disabled it.) I got IS 2009 when Best Buy sold it for $25 after Xmas.

A lot of free security apps that are good at one thing, whether AV, or spyware, or firewall, have decided lately to become "all in one" solutions, tacking on half-baked functions that are done better by somebody else. Maybe they've fixed AVG, but I dropped it from my old 866mhz 512mb Dell (RIP) in 2007 when it got too big and slow for that system. Before I got Norton with three licenses, I was happy with Avira (small footprint and high scoring on tests) and ZoneAlarm (which does ask for too many permissions) on this netbook.

I've been a OneCare user for as long as I can remember. It has caught more problems than any of the freeware/shareware progs I've used. I like that it doesn't slow my system down.
