I'm soon getting my Aspire One A110, with the pre-installed Linux distro.

I was hoping to install XP instead, and to make it as dead simple as possible I was thinking about getting a USB DVD-ROM from eBay. Would this make installation as easy as it would be on any other computer? Or are there issues relating to using an external optical drive? Any features that will need tweaking to make it work in XP? (networking, wifi, sound, graphics)
Thanks for any and all help :)

    Hi,
Having tried various linux distro's I have installed Windows XP on mt AA1. I bought a external DVD writer off ebay and it works well. I just inserted the cd and pressing F12 on bootup, I booted into the usb dvd writer. Apart from installing the xp drivers on the AA1 off the Acer website, that is all I had to do. At some point I may go back to Linux. While the AA1 is used for working, I do have 2 other laptops. I do like the AA1 for it's portability. I only have 512k of memory but XP runs fast enough for my needs.

When I can get round to it, I will be upgrading to 1.5mb of ram. Then I will give Windows 7 a try.

Thanks for the reply. That's all I needed to know :)
Just ordered a USB DVD-ROM off ebay for $36. My Aspire One will ship with 1GB RAM so hopefully XP will run pretty much like a dream. Thanks again :)

I can't install xp on my aspire one's external 30GB usb hard drive even though the drive is formatted as a Fat partition.. I boot the dvd off the external dvd rom drive and it runs up until it finishes loading windows and tried to boot it. At this point I get a stupid message saying windows found an error and can't continue. Something about if this is the first time this error is encountered, reboot.
I can't get past the blue screen of death error message so that I can install xp on my external usb hard drive. Could this problem be due to having my expansion card being plugged in? Does anyone know? Or is this a problem with xp not understanding how to boot when a usb hard drive is running? The AAO bios recognizes the usb drive so that's not the issue.
I suppose I could borrow the wife's computer or use my mac's vp7 xp and reformat the usb drive and install the system files in the command directory, then copy whatever dos files I need to get basic dos commands working so I can boot off the usb drive and try re-installing from the xp dvd. I would rather run xp off the external usb hard drive so that I can run both linpus and xp on my AAO.

    HELP!!!

I have the problem above - trying a fresh XP Home install over linux with an external USB DVD drive.... results in blue screen with 'cannot continue' message.

Maybe the storage is not big enough? I have a 1gb sd card on top of the standard 512mb internal.
