I have western digital 500gb element I was hoping I could use to install a differnet operating system from linux i.e. windows xp home but its not allowing me to access the drive although it is detecting it.

So my first question is whether its even possible with a drive of this size / make

My 2nd is if its possible to install xp of external drive and if so what others here would recommend

    thanks

Is the drive formatted as NTFS ? If so you will first need to install NTFS support under linux before you can access it.
One of the live updates provides read only support, if you want full support you will need to install ntfs-3g.
