Is it possible to swap out the ATOM N270 for the Atom N280 on an AA1? Say... the 8 gig SSD edition

Yes... Just after that you can throw AA1 to the rubbish bin...

Atom chips are soldered onto the system board, so unless you have robot-like precision you'd be more likely to fry your motherboard than successfully make the swap.

My understanding is that a machine setup for that chip size, uses hot air to solder the chip in place. This is of coarse a new chip on a new motherboard. If you had this very expensive machine and a new chip you might be able to do it.

I have read of someone doing the swap, but they had access to the hot air machine.

Not worth the risk.... just get another netbook with the new CPU when it becomes available. They're cheap anyways. :D

Even if you could do the soldering you need to also replace the other chips that the new processor needs and there is noway I know of to insure that the motherboard is compatible with the new processor.

Isn't the bios set for Atom. You'd probably need a new chipset too. doing all this would probably cost more than actually buying a new netbook. Also If it did work it's performance wouldn't be optimal anyway. What is the speed of the N280 anyway?

With the prices of netbooks still very cheap even with the new Atom N280. The price vs risk ratio is not worth it. Just go get another netbook. ;)
