Short Answer: For office work, whatever used the 945GM would probably work better because it probably has an Intel ATOM N270 processor, which is faster than the Intel Atom Z520, which is the default processor with the GMA500 video core. An average user might not notice a big difference.

For DVD and HD: the GMA500 can be a win here with the right drivers, but there is a religion around which drivers, codec's, and viewer programs work best. Read some more on this forum to get a taste of what can be done and how easy it is to do.

Streaming Web Video like Hulu and YouTube: the 945GM because it is coupled to the faster processor (N270). Up until now no one has come up with a video driver for speeding the unpacking of Adobe Flash content on either the GMA500 or the 945GM. Since the processor has to do the Flash unpack, the more powerful processor (the N270) does a better job.

As of now the GMA500 is only used with the slow Z520 processor. In netbooks the 945GM is only used with the N270 or N280 processors.
