It's a wellknown fact among us old time hackers, that computers run on smoke and not on electricity which the common people think. The proof : If you have let out the magical smoke from the computer, no matter how much electricity you pour into the computer, it won't run anymore.

So I am sorry to say, you are the proud owner of a clamshell shaped doorstop now.

Is the smell coming from the brick or the computer? Have you tried running it without the battery? It is possible for the computer to be fixed but unless it is the battery or the brick then it may well be cheaper to buy a new AA1.
