I'm assuming Windows XP? Or are you using Linplus?

If you are using Firefox, go to preferences and toggle over to "advanced", then "network" and you find an indicator regarding "cache". You can set that as high or low as you want with the default being 50MB. Clearing private data only clears stored login information, passwords and the like. On IE, their is a setting that will remove temp files, but if I am not mistaken that must be done manually.

    I hope this helps.

Under Options/Privacy/Clear Private Data/Settings you can also set the exact items you want Firefox to purge when you use Clear Private Data from the Tools menu. A respected and widely used freeware tool for taking care of this type of thing and more on your entire system is: CCleaner.
