This is a thread I've posted for fellow members of HotUKDeals.com, those that have purchased the recent deal on the go (Acer Aspire One AOA150-Ab Netbook, 512Mb RAM, 120GB HDD for £150 Instore @ Asda UK), to say hello & to see if they need a hand at all with anything.

Thanks for all the advice you've been giving out. I've been trying to get accustomed to Linplus Lite, but think I'll be wussing out & installing XP once my memory & usb stick arrive. (Really want to see what One Note is like on this) I've got the guide bookmarked so fingers crossed.

I posted a screen shot of my desktop on another thread on here http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=9950 that took me hours but its all new to me :?

Just came on to say hello :)
Very impressed with this wee machine. I bought 2 and have installed XP on one to see how it performs.
No complaints at all. I've read about a fan utility and will probably give it a go if I can find it.
This does seem to be a very helpful forum for both newbies and experienced users.

    Hello yipykayay!
Glad to hear that you are enjoying this lovely netbook.
If you got all drivers from the Acer Support website, you may as well download newer Graphics driver from the Intel website.

If you are looking for a fan utility, I would recommend a1ctl.
With this utility you will be able to turn off your fan (which isn't the best option to choose), set it in slow mode or in auto mode. You can also use custom settings. You can choose at what temperature your fan turns off, goes in to slow mode and when it goes in to auto mode. I personally use these settings:

Turn off fan under 60 degrees celsius
Slow mode at 65 degrees celsius
Auto mode at 70 degrees celsius

Maximum operating temperature for Intel Atom N270 (the processor that lives inside Aspire One's) is 90 degrees celsius, so I don't worry about overheating. The temperature goes down when it starts auto mode so it kicks in just every now and then.

As well as that, you can prevent the hard disk from making clicky noises, if you have the hard drive version of the Aspire One. You will also be able to disable devices to get more from your battery. And another thing this utility does is allows you to change the resolution to 1024x768. No need for it really, but it might be useful.

This utility can be downloaded from: http://noda.free.fr/dev/a1ctl_v0.4.rar (Version 0.4)

    Good Luck & Take Care!

Sound's like a common case of Aceritis-a good dose of XP should sort it!
Was impressed with your desktop adjustment!! Well done!
My problem is I'm so used to XP and am comfortable with just putting discs in the computer, clicking on something and for it to just install and work. with this it seems I have to go to terminal, type codes in, format Usb sticks, etc. Something I'm just not used to and can't seem to get my head around it! I just want to give the netbook to someone, tell them what I want, (which is only one piece of software) and happy days! Any volunteers on the Wirral?!

Although I did install my printer on to it last night!! Very proud of myself!! So easy though!

Had enough now-and the snookers on!

Yes, you have to be running Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7!

Hi i just got the acer through the hotdealsuk and am having probs with installing vlc media player
this is what it reads in terminal.
By the way its my first day with linux and its seems to be a struggle to do anything on it for me at mo.

    [root@localhost ~]# rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm

You can simply download, extract & run VLC setup from Acer Support Website! :D
It's really easy and it worked for me when I was using Linpus.

My RAM arrived from Crucial this morning, can't believe it got here so quickly. I've read through hmraao's guide on upgrading a couple of times, have watched the You Tube tutorials on it, am just working up the courage to go for it.

EDIT: Have now got a 1.5gb AAO
