    Hi folks,
had to give in & install xp on my new AAone, my shortcomings, couldn't get on with Linpus.

Now I'm looking for a lite version of office, just word, excel.

Does anyone know of any such things?

    Cheers
    Dave

Depends what you want to do. For simple operations like typing and filling tabs Open Office will be enough. For more complicated Excel operations you can try M$ Office 2003 as is smaller/less resources taking then M$ Office 2007. Personally I use Open Office on my AA1, M$ Office 2007 on Desktop and it works very well for me...

In the UK, no idea where you are or if it applies worldwide, you can get Home and Student Edition. Or something like that...
Only Word Excel, One Note and Powerpoint. This is the leanest package available, asI don't think you can get the programs seperately.
Just checked the site for you, and not available seperately,

Thanks for your replies folks. I think I'll have a look at this open office & see how it goes. The reason why I was looking for the Microsoft products is that all my business paperwork is done in those formats, word & excel. Don't fancy getting any funnies if I migrate a set of accounts

I've got office 2003 on my machine, but did a custom install for Excel and Word only and left out some of the bits of those I don't use.

If you are not using Office for business, then the Student and Teacher package or Microsoft Equip(sp) are the best options(essentially the same package, but equip also comes with live onecare and costs 69 US for 3 machines so it's less money). If you're going to use it for business and like office 2007 (What's not to like about the ribbon in Word??) then just custom install the full suite (unless you actually use one note) or cough up the money for the individual apps (usually more).

My legal method would be to try open office first. If I only needed ONE (1) MS app (word or excel) then add that, otherwise go with an MS office suite.

    Upgrades available to you?

Just don't install the new (read slow as possible) MS SQL server (like the one in the free accounting app) and everything will be fine w/ an install of office. The only thing you might be down is some money, but that's a tradeoff w/ OO.

I just came across this one today, looks like a great lightweight replacement word processer and spreadsheet app for Microsoft Word/Excel and OpenOffice. In just looking at them real quick they seem to be packed with a lot of features (and Office 2003 compatible).

    SoftMaker Office 2006 for Windows

you can use open office, or try using Wine then installing Office, just be aware that wine is highly unstable.

If there's any real investment of time in existing .doc or .xls files it's probably not worth fighting compatibility and formatting issues with some other office package, regardless what it claims for itself in converting MS formats. Older MS Office versions can be picked up for a song on eBay and you can selectively install. I don't need anything but Excel and the Office Toolbar (saves screenspace) on this Acer so that's all I've installed.

This is an excellent recommendation. SoftMaker Office is much faster than Openoffice and works like a charm on the Aspire One. Thank you for the tip!
