    Christian,

You posted a similar cry for help on the other thread, I wont reply to both so hopefully you'll read this one:

Look Linux is not Windows. You need to hit the web and do some reading, and spend some time just working through some tutorials to get familar with the basics of the basics of Linux before attempting any of these kind of hacks. Please stop pestering people to help you until you have mastered the following by yourself:

    1. How to access the terminal. (alt-F2, terminal)
    2. How to move and view the filesystem (cd, ls, pwd)
    3. How to copy, move and delete files (rm, cp, mv)
    4. How to create, edit and save files (mousepad)
    5. How to execute commands as root (sudo)

Otherwise you are just wasting your time, and everyone elses.

xfdesktop doesn't load the mcs manager first, it actually doesn't call it directly at all. It checks to see if the file 'xfce-mcs-manager.new' exists, if it does it renames it to 'xfce-mcs-manager' and then calls 'xfdesktop2', waits 5 seconds and renames 'xfce-mcs-manager' back to 'xfce-mcs-manager.new'. So it seems Acer's custom 'xfdesktop2' looks for and runs 'xfce-mcs-manager' itself, but they changed the name of it for whatever reason. So they rename it to make sure it's there for their desktop to use, wait a bit to be sure it's picked it up then change it back again. The only reason I can think they've done this is to stop the normal desktop working properly. Not sure why you were having trouble with settings not sticking, but I can't see how these methods differ in what ends up getting launched.

    Thks Sancho,
still, that doesn't really help getting it back. would you have an idea what to do now? alternative would be to format and put something else in place of Linpus. which in itself would be one big frustration.

    is there no "restore" command?

    your advice please?

Hi, I think this isn't fair, since I have been successfully working with Linpus for 3 Weeks now and managed to solve all problems. of course, I know such basic commands, but the desktop simply has vanished, at least in part, and the question only is, how th restore it. I even managed, despite the disappeared desktopm to get back into terminal. just need to know which files to run, and what command to use.

    2) I believe it is justified to call for help, unless this forum insists to be obe for linus experts only who have passed the linux-exams. how on earth should we learn if not by making mistakes?

    cheers

Sorry I'm not sure I understand exactly what issue you're having, were you able to edit the /etc/xdg/xfce4-session/xfce4-session.rc file, and now the desktop's not starting? Or were you not able to edit it?

If you weren't able to edit it, keep in mind you'll need to be root to make changes to that file, so launch whatever editor you prefer with the sudo command.

Thanks for explaining it. I'd managed to figure out that it was checking and renaming the mcs-manager but I couldn't for the life of me figure out why. Here's the thing I can't figure out though: now I'm not using xfdesktop2 anymore, using xfdesktop-xfce instead, how is it that mcs-manager is still loaded correctly? (remember I dont load it from xfce4-session.rc)

My theory is that this isn't Acers mod, but the way XFCE works for some reason. I think that because xfdesktopnew and xfdesktop btoh have the same script to rename mcs-manager. Either way I suspect renaming the file for awhile is more important to the proper running of the setup than we think...

When I tried your method before, I didn't remove or delete my .config/xfce4 and .config/xfce4-session directories at the time of the switch as I do now. That could have been it, I admit.

    Christian,

Thanks for replying. The problem could be language ... you wrote "but I can't open /etc/ for editing. when I click on it, it calls for Nautilus filemanager" as if you were clicking on things in thunar. That was the impression I got.

If you really were using the terminal (alt-f2, type "terminal") as you suggested you wouldn't be clicking on anything would you? You'd simply type,

    Code:
    sudo mousepad /etc/xdg/xfce4-session/xfce4-session.rc
and be done with it. The black screen means xfdesktop-xfce failed to load, most likely due to a simple typing error when editing the file. I did it myself, typing xfdesktop when I meant to write xfdesktop-xfce.

That is something I haven't been able to figure out either :D

When I've tried playing around with just launching xfdesktop-xfce with the mcs manager binary renamed (and not calling it directly), I always get an error that the HAL hasn't initialized properly, but it seems it has as I'm still able to talk to all hardware fine and nothing seems to not work, perhaps the rename somehow suppresses that message?
