Sorry to be posting this twice, but I'm so excited that I haven't bricked my AAO!

    In summary:
    - Installed 1Gb of RAM
    - Certain keys on keyboard no longer functioned, eg 4 5 e r d f x ....
    - Thought I had bust the keyboard and maybe the keyboard controller
    - Ordered new keyboard.
    - Installed new keyboard
    - Same keys would not work.
    - Removed new RAM
    - Now all all the keys work as normal :D

So question is: incompatible RAM or dodgy RAM????

I installed a 1Gb stick I bought from PCWorld (UK). For those who are interested the RAM was
    PNY OPTIMA SODIMM DDR2 800Mhz PC2-6400 200 pins

So now I'll research RAM which others have found compatible....

I had the same symptoms when I upgraded my RAM to a Kingston KVR667D2S5/1G module. Pulled the Aspire apart and checked all the cables.. same result.

Then I re-installed the original memory (as you did), and all the keys started working.

Then I went and put the Kingston back in.. and the keys still worked.

I suspect the memory wasn't seated properly in the slot wen I first put it in.

Oooh maybe I'll try that. It would be great if the RAM worked and I didn't have to spend more cash!

Sorry to hear about your strange problem. I am slightly worried now as I recently bought some PNY PC2-5300 "value" RAM from play.com for my Dad's AA1.

I have succesfully upgraded two other AA1s so far using Hynix (PC2-5300) and Crucial (PC2-4200) 1GB SO-DIMMs.

I had my Acer upgraded with a 1 MB stick from Crucial.com after running their memory upgrade checker.

The stick was DDR2 PC-5300 and the 512 MB stick pulled was the same (DDR2 PC-5300). While I realize you can use memory rated either higher or lower than this, perhaps you're asking for problems with capability if you do. And why bother to pay for higher rated memory IF it defaults to a lower rating?

@Thwack - You are a genius, sir! I (once again) took my AAO apart and made extra sure I seated the RAM correctly..... and as you predicted the keyboard works as expected..... Thank you. I've learnt many lessons through this process!

Uhh, you type "1MB" I'm not dissing you, it was just funny.
Reminds me of the days when people could finally put 1 meg of ram in their PC.
Of course I wasn't around in those days.
My PC days started when people said 8Megs were good but 16Megs were better. My first PC had a one gig hard drive and everyone said that I'd never fill that thing. Well, it was actually my family's PC but...
