Yes, have to agree with the above comments - there are 6 million AAOs out there now and a really easy to install, out-of-the-box perfect alternative to linpus could have a massive impact. Keep up the good work Leak.

We are still working hard to release 2.1alpha. We have removed wifi-radar as it didnt support wpa2, we have decided to include wicd. Also, the openbox approach has been replaced with xfce4, at least for now. We may go back to openbox, but it was just too daunting to do with just leak and I working. I am going to redo the osd package that I made for oneLinux and it should be included in 2.1a as well as a new kernel (possibly, if I feel like tying up my aao for an hour). I am wondering how many users want an option between two different desktops... one being xfce and the other being xfce with ume, if ume can run without gnome. I would prefer to see both in there, but it will add some bloat. Is there a calling for this option?

My instinctive answer, based on product releases of our own company, is to concentrate on getting just one of them working absolutely bomb-proof as a priority, then maybe think of other options later on. If you have both then it's potentially loads more work & testing. Trying to be all things to all men just leads to lots of dissatisfied men...

Personally, I'd love to see one with the UME bundled in, as I've grown rather fond of it. However, I was under the impression it needed gnome (gnome-panel to configure the top bar). Another idea is to maybe see if you could include instructions on how to install it for each user by themselves (what packages are needed).

Just to say to the lads and lasses working hard on Kuki, your efforts are appreciated and i think what you are doing is awesome! 14 seconds is an ace mark!

My opinion for some default apps is :

    Cheese
    GnomeDo
wvdial & Ipaq Module to allow for 3G connectivity :D
    Optional UME-Launcher

Would be happy to help out in any way i can, but i only have experience in .NET and PHP which likely is of no use. :(

    Re: Kuki

Hi Syco54645, and thanks for all your efforts. Kuki will be the next big thing for the AAO yeah. :)

Hmm, I for one, wouldn't mind the option to choose between two different interfaces. I have for example used DSL, Puppylinux and Slax before (all being very tiny, light distros) and also tried out Ubuntu, OpenSUSE with both the Gnome and Kde desktop (Kde being almost too bloated to my likings). Something in between would be nice if I could only pick one desktop (=xfce). Bottom line, it's always good to have options -- we are all different individuals and have different approaches as to what makes an OS great. Just my two cents. Thanks for listening.

Thumbs up for the initiative guys, i just got myself an AAO and i already have 2/3 problems with Linpus, i already don't like this os, so i'm really hoping u can come up with a good alternative, nothing fancy, but at least with the basic (updates, wifi, messenger, multimedia) working properly.

    I'll stay tuned

    cheers,

    Re: Kuki

Hi Kris and welcome to the forums. :)

The great guys behind the kuki project are indeed working on making a tailor made OS for the AAO, meaning everything should work out of the box after installation. I just wanted to add this, not necessarily addressing you, but just to clear some myths surrounding Linux (in particularly). When people are expecting everything to work out of the box -- including playing back all kinds of media -- they often don't realize that not even Windows come pre-installed with all the codecs necessary to play back all kinds of media files. If you need to watch flv-files, avi files with divx, xvid codecs etc. you most often will find (no matter what OS you're on) that non-free codecs have to be installed. Now this is fairly easy to install on both the Linux and Windows platforms so not to worry, but there IS a reason why many (most) operating systems don't come pre-installed with non-free software. Just wanted to make that clear. :)

I'd rather see efforts toward just an xfce4 desktop, with the mobile-look desktop a distant second priority, if at all. A second package for installation of the ume for those that want it would suit me. It could be nice to use if the AAO is briefly loaned to someone to check their email, etc., or if it was bought for the kids to use, but I think most people want a fully operational battlestation. Er, desktop.

Honestly I don't know nothing about GUIs (I'm assuming it's not just a "theme" but also some stuff under the hood that works differently) but purely based on appearance I would prefer windows with the smallest possible statusbars and menubars and stuff like that. Because the screen is so small, it's nice to have the most possible room for content.

I did like the xfce on Linpus so as a layman I'd just say "go for it" ;)

UME is a distant second priority. My true passion is creating custom x interfaces. When I get bored I change my desktop machine. I just wanted to gauge the interest that there is in this type of interface because the xorg.conf file needs some things setup for it.

    Re: Kuki

    Hi csmo,

thank you for the explanation, you're absolutely right, i'm just a bit frustrated at the moment because, as i wrote in the other topic, i just got a brand new AAO and messenger doesn't work without updates and live update doesn't work (i don't know why) so that was my main complaint about this distro, considering it's really the least you could expect to work out of the box, i only added the multimedia in the list because i'd like to be able to play whatever file i like without having to search the forums to play a movie, but that's the last thing i worry about.

I love Linux, i love the whole concept behind it, unfortunately i always had problems with all the distros i ever tried (and i tied a lot) but i do realize that much of it is probably down to my inexperience, just i didn't expect to have such problems with a brand new machine. For instance i bought an advent 4211 for my wife a couple of months a go, with windows installed, and everything just worked and i didn't have to search forums all day to find out why the updates didn't connect to the server, or why messenger wasn't supported (!) i just wish one day the same would happen with a Linux distro.

Anyway, sorry for the OT, and let's hope the guys at kuki make this dream come true :) ;)

    cheers,

    kris

    Whats the battery life like?

Are we still stuck with the same old sound problem?

I realize that this is still early on in the development process, but do you see the sound issue being resolved? I see that that's still a problem in every Ubuntu installation of any sort I've read about. Could be a dealbreaker kind of thing for a lot of people, if that trend continues.

    Re: Kuki

I'm currently looking at a bug that comes with even linpus. Seems like the bios has problems dealing with video shared memory and this results in mtrr errors.
I still need to confirm if this causes any serious problems. But this bug annoys me.
If anyone wants to investigate it's the "no mtrr available" bug, well known among ATI card owners.
These errors sometimes cause low graphics performance and general X slowness, also might prevent X being able to allocate enough memory to start at all.
    Now for new features :
Cheese photoboot has been put into the distro and it's working quite nice, sound is working too.
I still have the "no sound from resume" issue but should not because i have the "toshiba" option selected.
I installed FF3.0 but this increased 100+ MB in the final size of the distro, wich i don't so i might remove it unless popular request asks me not to.
With FF inside the distro .iso reaches 500mb instead of 400'ish and 1.6GB installed instead of 1.3GB.
Anyway i haven't been able to look at it too much, was only able to do some improvements on Saturday but since i'm working 24x7 until the 17th my spare time can be limited if i get problems to solve at work (and i had a lot during the weekend).
Nonetheless i'm trying to develop a bit everyday and 2.1 release should be hopefully out this week.
Thank you all for your comprehension.
