If I can not restore my operating system using the Recovery Disc would it be possible to have limpus on a memory stick and use that as the operating system? If so how do I sort it, please?

I run linux os's from usb flash drives frequently and also have used them to install to my AAO's. I normally use Fedora but any linux distro that supports booting from usb should work. Fedora has a LiveUSB Creator that runs from Windows also. Some people use Unetbootin to create bootable liveusb also. Plug usb device in after installing linux, turn on laptop, press F12 and your usb device should be listed in the bootable device menu, choose that and if all went well you should running from the usb installed linux os.

ryptyde, thank you for that I am grateful. I am a techno thicky so forgive me for asking what may be blindingly obvious. Would there be an email programme etc included in the os that I download onto the usb memory stick? My wife only uses the Acer for internet. I assume I can find suitable Linux os on the internet?

The Fedora livecd/usb has an email handler, web browser and just about any apps you would need. Would have answered sooner but had a power outage due to a storm for a couple of days. Go to Distrowatch.com and view all of the popular linux distros available. :)

    Yes: The Fedora Project

I use Fedora on my main desktop computer and my Dell Inspiron 1525. I've used it for years and it's my Linux distro of choice.

The thing I most like about it is the very large repository of software available. If you learn about some software package you want to try out, chances are you can just type "yum install <package-name>" (or click the graphical equivalent) and voila--it's installed.
