A150L V3304. I've installed VLC following this procedure

    viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4429&p=29514&hilit=install+vlc+rpm#p29514

No problems with install and VLC works ok, but on a 720p video playback is quite jerky.

Is 720p just too much for the AAO or should I be able to get smooth running playback ?

Some people have tried alternative codecs, an updated video driver and other tweaks to improve the playback performance, but has anyone achieved smooth playback of 720p video yet ?

What modifications have you made and did they actually improve the video playback ?

The device certainly is capable of it.

Yes, very smooth playback here with 720p videos. However, I don't use VLC- my preferred program of choice is the developmental version of mplayer.

These are some of the modifications I made (some for 2d, so for 3d):

    1. Tweaked my /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    2. Get mtrr working: http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4256
    3. Put "export INTEL_BATCH=1" in my /etc/profile.local
    4. Put "echo 1024 > /proc/sys/dev/hpet/max-user-freq" in my /etc/rc.d/rc.local

Also make sure your software is configured to use xv output,

I have attached my xorg.conf for your reference:

Thanks for your help cpchan. I've tried your steps 1 to 4

    1. Tweaked my /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    2. Get mtrr working: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4256
    3. Put "export INTEL_BATCH=1" in my /etc/profile.local
    4. Put "echo 1024 > /proc/sys/dev/hpet/max-user-freq" in my /etc/rc.d/rc.local

and set VLC output to be XVideo. Unfortunately it hasn't really improved things. A 720p playback in VLC is still jerky, it's now in smaller jumps but the jumps occur much more frequently. One difference in your procedure, I don't have an /etc/profile.local file. I put INTEL_BATCH=1" in my /etc/profile as others have reported is that correct ?

Whats involved in using the developmental version of mplayer ?

Have you updated your video drivers ?

Sorry I should have said. I took a backup copy and then replaced my /etc/X11/xorg.conf with the one you provided, along with the other changes, and rebooted.

Make sure your kpowersave scheme is set to 'performance', so that the CPU is running at full speed.

Thanks for the feedback. I've switched to SMPlayer which seems to give the best performance but is still jerky.

I also tried the updating the video driver, which didn't seem to improve things and messed up the colour saturation.

So I'm beginning to think the AAO performance is not adequate for the video I have. Can people post details of video playback that works ok please. The video I am having trouble with is:

    1097MgB in 99mins 0.184MgB/sec mkv 24fps using ffh264 codec

Have you tried using any of the other vlc outputs? I find that opengl works much better for me, but I've not tested with a 720p video.
