Just to help anyone who is looking for additional Linux Applications, here is a quick list of what I consider to be must have software (or at least very nice to haves). Its assumed in certain cases you have performed enabling "advanced mode".

FBReader (Ebook reader available in default repository).

VLC ( Media Reader for Movies/Audio, Plays just about anything). Check out their site to install.

Opera 9.5 (I kinda like it better than Firefox 3 and its faster than the default Firefox 2). I used the Fedora 8 RPM version from their site.

Gyachi (Yahoo Messenger with WebCam support - Seeing if it works with the Aspire webcam out of the box)

Nice list. Seeing as I haven't gotten dirty with linux for the past 5 years (I was a volunteer for VectorLinux), I'll try to check out everyone's contributions and see if I can build rpm's compiled on the Aspire One itself.

This would make packages that are truly customized performance-wise on the One. :)

I don't have the One (yet), but on my home PC, my must-haves are, in no particular order:

    Opera 9.5
    Kopete (MSN/ICQ)
    Skype
    Konversation (IRC)
MPlayer + win32codecs (plays everything VLC does, and with minimum fuss)
    Audacious (Winamp 2.x clone)
EasyTag (ID3 tag editor for mp3s)
    KTorrent
WINE (Windows Compatibility Layer, for those annoying government websites that *require* IE) I actually pay for Codeweavers Crossover, but that is because I need the support for work. Downtime is money, and crossover wine has nice features.
KDevelop (C/C++ development environment, although using it on the One may not be feasible)

If I think of more, I will edit this post, or post below

I ripped a DVD using Handbrake, mplayer on the One couldn't play it while VLC had no problems.
Thus my list is (haven't tried them on the One..):
    VLC (video)
    Skype (VoIP/webcam)
    Pidgin (Multi-IM)
    Firefox 3 (Webbrowser)
    Songbird (iTunes-clone)
    Transmission (Bittorrent client)

    Songbird RPM's

    add:

sudo apt-get install smbfs (will give you access to windows shared folders)

use smbtree to view shared folders ( smbtree -U username%password )

According to the manual, it runs on Fedora 6.

Now I am wondering, can someone help me install Firefox 3? I just tried uninstalling FF2, and it ended up wiping out my desktop completely. I will now be re-installing the OS.. on my first day :-/

Also, I was just looking at the other programs in the right click menu, and the "live update" shows a bunch of updates that supposedly make just about everything "perform better/faster". I'll go ahead and take the plunge and let you know if i end up reformatting again

edit: everything seems to be working just fine after all of the updates. Not really sure what they did, as the descriptions were.. not descriptive, but it runs perfectly fine, so I can't complain.

emacs (vi is already installed), gcc, ssh (be sure to add ssh-clients or you'll only get ssh-keygen), make, subversion, ruby, git...

    I've just installed Firefox 3 using Remi's repositories http://blog.famillecollet.com/ .
I've added them to the software manager and search for firefox, selected Firefox 3 and installed.

I left Firefox 2 in place because of the many dependencies, but Firefox 3 became the default browser automatically.

Does your standard email program still work? When I tried to install Firefox 3, it messed up some stuff like someone previously said here, eand the standard acer mail program didn't start up and I also ended up reinstalling the OS. It did work better than Firefox 2, so I'd still like to install it:p

How exactly did you do that? Heh.. it's tough being new to all of this.

Also, to install Pidgin i guess I need to put the .repo in /etc/yum.repos.d, but since I cannot get root access through the file manager, it won't let me move any files there, and I'm not sure how to use the terminal to move files.

FBReader is in the default depository. I can't find it. Could you explain where that is?

The manual is wrong. FC8 is the way to go. Trust me.

I have been using Yahoo Messenger mainly for voice and video chats. I have tried GYachI and the webcam does not work.
