I'm a total noob to linux, so please bear with me. I created a file using Mousepad with the above text in it. When I try to save it to "/etc/yum.repos.d/" I get the message "can't open a file to write". What does that mean? What am I doing wrong?

I'd appreciate anyone's help on this.

    Thanks!

you need to be ROOT (admin). you can't save a file in that folder because it is only writable by root account.

    1.open terminal
    2.sudo mousepad /etc/yum.repos.d/skype.repo

then you will be able to save.

the sudo command will change your user mode to root temporarily.

Please don't forget to add the missing console goodies...

Man <-- Missing man-pages, after this you can use "apropos" to find apropiate apps.
slocate <-- After this, use "updatedb" this update the info pages of all applications
MC <-- File Manager, Must have.
    Orpie <-- RPN console calculator
units <-- let you convert units from console.

I hope you find these usefull.

If you know some more interesting console apps, please update this small list.

Here are the 'extras' I've installed after two weeks of AA1-ing:

    VLC
    Opera
    Skype
    Thunderbird
    Wireshark
    AbiWord
    Planner
    OpenSSH

I also removed all of the non-western fonts which freed up about half a gig of storage.

Hadn't played much with Opera before, I installed it after Firefox seemed a little sluggish. After a couple of weeks with it I like it so much I'm replacing Firefox on all of my desktops with it.

    Thanks Perry.

Can you share the way you removed all non Western fonts? I made it manually with smart, but I'm not sure if I kept some, since I only recovered like 300 Mb in space.

    Thank you in advance

How did you get rar working? I've tried sudo yum install rar but the system can't find it.

Trying to use Xarchiver, it just says it can't open it.

Anyone? I got this thing to watch videos on the national express, but the file comes in two rar archived bits. Simple on windows, just install winrar. But on this system!? I've been looking for ages for a way to unrar something and I can't find anything.

On the other hand, this forum looks lovely on the one.

I did it manually, too, with the out-of-the-box pirut. One of the first things I did after getting the machine stable was to look at every installed package to decide if I needed it or not. It took half an hour or so but I think it was worthwhile.

You may also want to take a look at this if you want to remove more packages. Even if you don't want to go through all the commands you can just use the first one to show all installed packages sorted by size, and then remove them with pirut if you prefer it to the command line.

If you want Xarchiver to be able to open RAR files then you need to install unrar

Open the following URL in your browser on the AA1:
    ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/freshrpms/fedor ... 7.i386.rpm
note: click on the link, don't copy it

When asked what do with the file, say open it with the Software Installer (which is the default)

    When downloaded click Open
Enter your root password when prompted (the password you set when you first powered up the AA1)

This will open the software installer and you will be asked if you want to install Unrar.
    Go ahead.
You will be warned that the package's authenticity cannot be verified, but please allow it to install, this software is clean.

When the installer is done you should find that Xarchiver can happily open and extract RAR files.

    Enjoy. :D
