Wow.... where do I start... ;)

Please note that I do a lot of network administration, computer security, and systems admin work. I also have a DJ business and installed some applicaitons to help with that as well.

Nearly all were installed through the advanced menu

    nmap
    wireshark
    driftnet
    macchanger
    kismet
    vnc
    ettercap
    tcpick
    tcp xtract
    snort
    chrootkit
    tcpdump
    dnscap
    ngrep
    pcapdiff
    tcpreplay
    tcpflow
    ipcalculator
    nessus
    airsnort
    man
    crack
    onesixtyone
    xprobe2
    nbtscan
    xfce-wavelan
    aircrack-ng
    htop
    x2vnc
    openssh
    rdesktop
    ntfs-3g
    etherape
openoffice 2.4 - including writer, calc, impress, math, base, etc.
    quake3
    bluefish editor
    epdf viewer
    gimp
    zenmap
    skype

    wine

    Under WINE
    izotope RX
    MediaMonkey
    mixmeister bpm analyzer

I still need to install MixMeister Fusion/Studio under wine, vlc, and a couple other applications. And of course this is only the stuff I've kept track of... ;) I do need to figure out how to get evolution installed as well.

BTW, I removed a lot of the eastern fonts that weren't needed, the pdf reader, and a couple other things. I'm also running a 16GB SD card to extend the SSD I already have installed.

    - KDE Desktop (kdebase + kdeutils only to keep Aspire One slim + Domino style + nuvoX icon)
    - Amarok (need xine-lib-extras-nonfree for MP3)
    - Audacious (BMP fork, can reuse XMMS and Winamp 2 skin)
    - Kaffeine (KDE xine frontend since xine exist in the system + better if your system have win32 codec)
    - MythTV (frontend only without backend + MythMusic, MythGallery + MythVideo)
    - Gwenview
    - Gimp
    - Yum Extender (yumex as pirut replacement)

Man, where do I start. Not too many for me right now ... I installed about 50 before, but not anymore. :p Currently I have Amarok [with the MP3 edit], gFTP, gParted, WINE, xboard[chess!], and I just installed code:blocks [thanks for the tip! This will definitely be useful in a little bit] and freeciv [The first time my linpus crashed I couldn't restore it, so I put Ubuntu on instead for a couple days ... and ... freeciv is cool. The instant on/off and battery life advantages the disease OS has are too great though.]
I need to figure out how to put on screensavers instead of the default menu, but other than that ... goodness. :D

Re: FreeMind mindmapping - List of Hot Linux apps to add

This simply does not work for me. I get a list of failed dependencies:
    error: Failed dependencies:
    jakarta-commons-lang is needed by freemind-0.8.1-1.noarch
    relaxngDatatype is needed by freemind-0.8.1-1.noarch
    msv-xsdlib is needed by freemind-0.8.1-1.noarch
    jgoodies-forms is needed by freemind-0.8.1-1.noarch
    ws-jaxme is needed by freemind-0.8.1-1.noarch
    jakarta-commons-codec is needed by freemind-0.8.1-1.noarch

Does it actually work for you?

    I added:

    Code:
app - description - install method

    Abiword editor pirut
    Gimp graphics pirut
    Opera 9.60 browser site/rpm [1]
    Osmo pim pirut
    VLC media player livna/yum [2]

    [1]
    Go to http://www.opera.com/download/index.dml?opsys=Linux i386&lng=en&ver=9.60&platform=Linux i386
Select distribution and vendor: Fedora > Fedora Core 5, Core 6,7,8
    Select download location near you
    Download Opera
In the console go to the folder where you saved the Opera-package and type:
    Code:
    #>sudo rpm -i opera-9.60.gcc4-shared-qt3.i386.rpm
    [2]
Install livna-8 if not installed already:
    Code:
    #>sudo rpm -ivh [url]http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm[/url]
    Now install VLC
    Code:
    #>sudo yum install vlc

It works fine for me. The only one of these dependencies not in the default repo's is jgoodies-forms ; I had to find it on rpm.pbone.net (the specific page is http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/9251248/com/jgoodies-forms-1.2.0-1.fc8.noarch.rpm.htmland then download it from one of the mirrors listed, making sure to get the fc8, i386 version. Install it first, then the Freemind rpm (letting the installer find the other dependencies, download and install them). You need a live internet connection while installing freemind so that Pirut can download the missing dependencies.

I spent awhile today trying to track this down, and did finally succeed in getting Freemind installed on the Acer.

Steps: first, go to http://eric.lavar.de/comp/linux/rpm/noarch/ in your browser.
Second, start downloading the rpms to install 8.1 I worked through that, then the plugins, then the help, then the calendar, etc. Whenever you get a dependency failure, go back and download the one it suggests. I did have to do some digging to find the fedora 8 rpm batik file, which is the only one that didn't appear on the URL cited above -- and I'm not sure that I do have the ability to export to a pdf.

But here's the good news. Downloading straight from the website does seem to give you what you need to do comprehensive mindmapping on the Acer Aspire.

One of the reasons I bought this was to get a machine that could do presentations using Freemind. I haven't tested the projection side of this yet, but at least the software side is working.

    Hope this helps somebody.

    Thanks for this post.

FYI, here's how I installed zenmap & nmap...

    Code:
    sudo yum install python-sqlite2
    sudo rpm -vhU [url]http://nmap.org/dist/nmap-4.76-1.i386.rpm[/url]
    sudo rpm -vhU [url]http://nmap.org/dist/zenmap-4.76-1.noarch.rpm[/url]
