Hi guys i just got me an AAO with linpus and not much seems to work ootb..

My messenger app doesn't work, i read on this forum u need to run the live update in order for it to work, only, guess what, the live update doesn't work either, i get this error that i'm not connected to a network, which i most definitely am. I've been trying since last night...

I was thinking about installing ubuntu or some more serious distro instead of Linpus but as i could read on this forum none of them works properly (that's the story for me with any linux i have tried so far , even on my desktop pc, unfortunaltely, there's always smthing not working)

I bought the 8gb nand AAO because it was very cheap, i wasn't expecting it to do craty stuff, but i was hoping that basic things like updates and messenger would work straightaway without having to resort to hacks and stuff!

Anyone has any advice to what i should do before i return this thing and go for a windows one ?

    thanks very much,
    kris

How do you know that you are actually connected? are you using the wifi or the wired LAN port?

Hi Tamrac thanks for your quick reply,

i know that i am connected since i wired the AAO to my netgear router and i'm surfing with firefox on the same computer, the connections at least work properly..

So i guess u can connect to live update today no prob then?

I might just try and connect with the wireless at work and see what happens

    cheers,

    kris

Right, i have tried with the wifi at work, even worse.. when at home it showed me the list of updates before telling me it couldn't connect, here it doesn't even do that, it just goes straight into error window.. i guess i'm stuffed

    any ideas ?

    cheers,
    kris

Try running it from a terminal: in the terminal do

    Code:
    sudo onlineupdate
You'll get quite a lot of output, and some of it will probably have things like GTK_CRITICAL in it, but don't worry about that stuff. The output should start with something like

    Code:
Open the configure file onlineupdate.conf successfully
and after 20 lines or so more you'll get something like

    Code:
    setting url [url]http://update.linpus.com/ACER/AspireOne/v1.0.9/update.list[/url]
If you could copy down to there and about a dozen lines further, then paste that into a post here, it will probably give us some useful information to help us help you.

Hmm. Well, there's the problem: at some point the server at Acer's end has not transferred over a full file (hence the 'resume to downlond', which should be 'download' of course). Your machine is asking it to send over the rest of it, and the server doesn't like the idea since it reckons the file isn't that long ('Requested range not satisfiable' - so the request for bytes 435187 to the end of the file is not one it can deal with).

Two options, really: one, it's at Acer's end. If so, all you can do is retry from time to time and see if they fix it. It could be a damaged file at their end, or lack of bandwidth, or some server misconfiguation. I do wonder whether they are actually set up for the volume of update requests they are likely to get from the volume of machines they've sold: they could really do with some mirror servers around the world. (I've been looking up the curl error 18 which is referred to in your output - one other reference to it relates to issue with updating another version of Linux, Suse, which was solved by trying another mirror, sadly not an option we have (yet) with the One).

Two: it's at your end. Are you doing this by wireless - and if so can you try with a wired connection instead? Wireless shouldn't drop connections but it's not unknown, and has been reported on the Aspire One. Second, is there plenty of space on your disk? It's perhaps unlikely, but possible, that the file isn't completely downloading because you've got no space for it.

One other thought, but perhaps a long shot. In the terminal, do this:

    Code:
    cd /var/cache/online-updater
    ls -la
You will either get nothing (in which case forget this option!), or a list of files. Could you post that list? I'm wondering if there is something damaged from a previous failed download which is sitting there and leading the updater to try to download the rest of it, rather than starting again!

    OK, this is weird.

One of the files which is generating error messages is local.en.sh. The error message indicates that it's incomplete, and is trying to resume after byte 435187, which ties up with the size of the file in your cache. However I've just manually downloaded that file, it finished with no errors, and it's exactly that length - so why does the updater think it's incomplete?

One of the updates is to the updater itself. I would be inclined to run that update manually and see if that sorts things out; in a terminal do
    Code:
    cd /var/cache/online-updater
    chmod 777 online-updater080904.sh
    ./online-updater080904.sh
This should update the online updater; then delete the update files relating to the updater
    Code:
    rm online*
(there are two files to delete, you'll be asked to confirm both deletions).

Then reboot, and retry updating afterwards, and let me know what happens then. If it is still not working at that stage, I'd be inclined to:

    1. Delete all the files in /var/cache/online-updater and see if that helps (so it's got something in there which is corrupt)
    2. Somewhere on the macles.blogspot.com site there's a way of making the updates optional - do that and try applying them a few at a time, perhaps limiting the chances of something going wrong during file transfer.

Be warned that this is just what I'd do to try to solve the issue: it makes sense to me but I can't guarantee it's safe!

Does anyone know this - If you have previously installed NTFS-3g driver via a sudo update, will there be any conflict if you install the live update NTFS patch?

Thx for the link, the solution worked for me as well, I can write again NTFS sticks. Of course the update messed up the power management settings as well, had to set back everything manually.

I have a UK AA1 and don't type in (let alone speak) Czech or Polish. How can I deselect these two keyboard layout updates?

At the moment they are greyed-out meaning when I click on them the tick mark does not disappear.
