For anybody interested, I have just loaded the 2009 Gnome version.

Almost everything works out of the box (including both card readers if both holds cards during the build).

No wifi light but wifi works fine.
Although I am very much a KDE fan I still do not thing 4 is completely ready yet, Gnome seems much less cluttered on the small screen and compiz works fine.

I just installed the KDE4 version, and it was really surprising how well it works - including the wifi light on the front! I set up the wireless when I ran the live CD (Wep Key) and it was still there after the install. I've never had wireless working well via live CD, but to have it find my AP and keep my wep key was really surprising.
However, I added xfce meta packages and got a KDM error after trying to login. Not sure what that's about, so all i can get to is KDE4 desktop.

How did you get the wifi light to work? my setup seems to have all the hardware working, except the wifi LED light.

I have also just installed gnome Mandriva 2009. I have not completed testing. The wifi switch works but no wifi light.
Has anyone tried the Mandriva recommendation to use LXDE desktop on the aspire one?

I've seen these instructions floating around this forum. Does this installer give a Gnome option or is the image strictly KDE?

The one thing that probelmatic for me (Mandriva KDE) is that I seem not to be able access the SD drive. Says I have no permission. How do I allow access?

This is the message I get in Krusader

An error occurred while accessing '1.9 GiB Hard Disk (vfat)', the system responded: org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.PermissionDeniedByPolicy: org.freedesktop.hal.storage.mount-fixed auth_admin_keep_always <-- (action, result)

On mine, the left wifi LED remains off. But at least the wifi activity indicator LED(orange) now works. And Gnome is way way faster than the KDE desktop.

My WiFi light works great for me, but only after updating the kernel and the WiFi drivers (because I wanted to make Virtual Box to work, which required some new kernel).

The wifi light meaning the left LED? The wifi activity LED(right) works out of the box in Mandriva. It's the one on the left w/c is not working. If you got the left LED working, would you mind posting what drivers you installed to get it to work? Thanks. :D

Oh, there is a left one? :D What is the purpose for it then?
About my right LED, it did work with Mandriva out of the box, but it didn't seem to me that the blinking reflected the network traffic. After the kernel and madwifi update, it seems to me that the blinking is more consistent with the network traffic.

I have also just installed Mandriva 2009 Gnome on my AAO, with 1.5gig mem and 8gig SD harddrive, but I have a few questions:
When I plug in my headphones, it doesn't mute the internal speakers. Any suggestions?
I sometimes experience hiccups, it freezes, for a second or so. Its very annoying when typing and using the AAO. Anyone else experienced this?
And final, is there any way to make Mandriva boot faster?

This is very odd to me because the actual jack that was used in the past for head phones was very simple and it physically opened the circuit for the speakers and the new jack appears to be controlled via a computer chip and software. Sounds inefficient to me.

Thank you very much dack001, cannot believe I overlooked that post. Tried the SSD disk tuning trick so I hope that takes care of the hickups...

What about the battery life, is it notably lower in comparison to Linpus?
