Do you have to do anything fancy to use the in-built mic and what's the best way to test it...?

    Thanks,

    in a terminal, do
    Code:
    arecord testrecording
...then talk to your One. You have to use CTRL-C to stop recording.

    Then do
    Code:
    aplay testrecording
and it should talk back to you!

...and indeed it does...! Thanks for that.

So how do we/why doesn't it work with the webcam app which is the first logical thing to try it with and expect it to work with?

    Cheers,

There's only one microphone on the One (the little hole with a mic symbol next to it, a couple of inches to the left of the webcam) so you won't get stereo!

I just got my One last week, and have been trying out the various features. I could get the webcam to record images OK, but no sound was captured - anyone got any ideas why not?

And, is there any way of making an icon so you can use the One as a recorder for voice memos - without having to do the command line stuff that daldred showed...?

After about 10 minutes on hold today with tech support. I got the "official" word. "The linpus os is a stripped down linux and doesn't support the microphone without extra software (that acer doesn't provide or know about)." This was reinforced by, "Yes that feature works in the Windows units, but not in the stripped down linux version of the product. That hardware is not supported on the Linux based machines."

Maybe there are some device driver people out there who will come to the rescue. Otherwise, we are forced to type rather than talk.

I think this mic problem is really strange.

I bought my AA1 (with linpus) to use it to keep the contact with my family while travelling.
So I installed Skype and tested it before I left home, and everything worked fine, no problems with sound/mic/ or webcam. It worked fine in MSN to.

But now when away, the mic isn't working. I get pic from webcam and can hear the others speak but I can't speak with them.

My guess is that some of the last updates unables the microphone. The only thing that I did after testing skype and MSN, with luck, was to install the last updates via live update.

Is there any way that one could uninstall the updates and perhaps get a working mic back?
