    I ordered a payg dongle from o2, an E160.
It had a 30 day return so took a risk.

Plugged in disconnected the wifi, went into control center, network & internet and selected set up a new interface.
selected GPRS/Edge/3G, went through the steps(skipping through the PIN number without changing anything), used these settings (possibly only payg settings):

    apn:
    m-bb.o2.co.uk

    user:
    o2bb

    password:
    password

it seemed to hang at stages, but eventually worked.

once connected the required landing page is:
    https://mobilebroadbandaccess.o2.co.uk/authenticate

this is the only page that connects until some credit is bought.
bb access also gets unlimited wifi from The Cloud access points too as a bonus.

Have this one. Installation in Mandriva 2009 system is done automatically by system - no need to do anything apart from configuring 3G network - I'm using the same settings. Works like a charm :) Perfect alternative to mobile phone with broadband...

    just a quick follow up...

although it appeared to connect OK and allowed me to pay for 24 hrs access fine, it wouldn't navigate to any other webpages.

found that if you 'connect modem' in the monitor area (the bit with speed graphs) it then works fine.
I also find this is the best way to connect to wifi access points.

Just to let you know there is place where you can download Mobile Partner Dashboard for E160 since o2 software (Connection Manager) changes settings for Wi-Fi to get over control of wireless in your laptop. I upgraded to Mobile Partner and from now on I have Intel software to control my Wi-Fi and Mobile Partner to control 3G modem....
