I was thinking about modding my AO751h into a tablet pc.
Anyone else considered this or think it would be a worthwhile project?
I had an HP TC1100 that I traded for this netbook (due to it being able to handle more storage and actually being supported under Windows 7 without hacks) and I greatly miss the tablet features. It makes mobile computing so much more fun.
I have found this add-on that you clip into the usb port to allow you to use a sylus/pen without having to buy an expensive touchscreen. http://www.penandfree.co.kr/english/pro ... laptop.asp
If this works well, then I am going to turn the LCD around so the LCD will face up while closed and perhaps seal it shut somehow so it'll be a pure tablet. I really do not like the design of the convertible tablets. Hoping to make it look like it came from the factory that way.
If anyone else is interested let me know, or perhaps I'll make a guide on how to do it step by step when I get my netbook back from Acer. Have to send it in since the SD card reader doesn't work at all.

As I said in your other post, it's been done with another model, so I don't see why it shouldn't be worthwhile doing to yours. Here's the link

Thanks for the link. I started a new thread because I'm sure these models have quite a few differences. And I planned on making a guide as well. That article was actually the reason I got the inspiration for this mod. I also wanted to throw in that link to that site for the add on adapter to use a pen so some people who would like "touchscreen" without having to tear their computers completely apart.

Not a problem, you're a different person, different model, you will more than likely have a different technique and different end-result, can't wait to see it myself. Have even given some thought to modifying my D250 that way. My idea is more along the lines of adding a touch screen to the top of the monitor, so i can still flip it open and use it as a notebook, but close it and use as a tablet. :D

I would personally recommend using a pen touch input source instead of a finger touch. Unless you have really big buttons, your finger isn't going to be as accurate. I've used both pen and also finger touch screens and find even the big 19+ inch finger touch screens, I ended up not touching what I was intending to. Of course if you had some flavor of linux like Ubuntu Netbook remix, the GUI on that might work well with touch.
I like the pure slate idea as they are great for taking notes in class and even for playing games like solitaire.
I agree getting used to a pure touch interface takes some time and the ability to switch back to a keyboard would come in handy. I had thought of the idea of making a slider type thing like what they have on cell phones but I don't think I have the technical experience to do such a thing.
When I had my HP TC1100, it had a detachable keyboard and was kind of like the convertible tablet pcs we have all seen except you could disconnect the keyboard part at any time. I found myself using it without the keyboard more than with it.
Best of luck to you if you decide to try it out. I will probably be ordering the DUO pen thing on Friday when I get paid and by the time it arrives in the mail I should have the netbook back from being repaired and can start on this project.

Thanks for your experience sharing. I am also using pen touch because of reasons you have specified and additionally I wanted to protect it with marks of finger come on the screen. So do you got your netbook or not?? :)

I do have my netbook back from the repair shop, although they didn't repair it. Their repair people aren't very bright thinking the standard coating on the inside of the case was "liquid damage" even though all of these models at least have it inside.
Hope to get that straightened out soon.
The adapter to turn this into a tablet is arriving on Monday so I will be able to at least test that out.
I'll post back about it Monday afternoon on how well it works. I found it cheaper on amazon.com under the search term "duo tablet kit"
    Only $85 dollars including shipping.

Anyone have any idea at all about how to lengthen the LCD cable? turning the screen around and the cable is WAY too short to connect.

Ok I'm going to give up on this project. extending the lcd cable seems like too big of a hassle and I don't know how to make it look like a factory tablet so I will be selling this comptuter and most likely buying an HP TC1100. I'll also be selling my DUO pen touch screen kit too. it works fine but I just don't like the laptop form factor. May just put on ebay I don't know. Any takers?
