I thought I'd share a few things I've done in order to get more browser screen space in Firefox.

    1. Install Firefox extension Personal Menu. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3895
    2. Install Firefox extension Fission. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1951
    3. Install Firefox theme MonoChrome (or your choice of themes that use smaller compact icons). https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8791
    4. Turn off the statusbar.

The Personal Menu extension lets you put the standard menu bar in a single icon of the navigation toolbar.

Fission extension makes a coloured background loading bar appear in the URL area (like Safari browser). As I turned off the bottom statusbar to gain space, I still wanted an indication of webpage loading progress which this now provides.

You'll probably want to put the bookmark button on the navigation bar as well for quick access.

Here's a screenshot... you'll notice a few other icons from extensions I use as well (Adblock Plus, NoScript, Video Downloader & Go Up).

Fast, easy and built-in way to max the screen space with Firefox: hit the F11 key and enjoy. Hit it again to show the menues, or move the mouse pointer to the top to reveal the adress bar. F11 makes Firefox the best choice on netbook screens.

Some extensions such as Vertigo and VertTabbar let you stack your browsing tabs on the side instead of across the top. While not really a net gain in screen space, it does offer a more efficient use of the space on a widescreen. (To avoid sideways scrolling on some websites, you may have to type Control-Minus sign).
