    Hello,
I have followed the instruction in http://aspireonelinux.blogspot.com/ for putting more codecs in aspire one. The command is:
    tar xvfj Downloads/all-20071007.tar.bz2
    sudo mv all-20071007/* /usr/lib/codecs/

The first command is okay, but the 2nd one prompted a meesage of Connection refused.. I need help, please does anyone knows how to solve this??

This is the complete copy in my terminal:
    [user@localhost ~]$ tar xvfj Downloads/all-20071007.tar.bz2

Best I can tell is this message comes from where they've tweaked the system not to log a lot of things to avoid unnecessary writing to the SSD. Your command still should have succeeded and you should be able to verify using the command:
    Code:
    ls /usr/lib/codecs
You might need to check that mplayer knows to check this path for libraries, if it is still not able to play media files of the type these files should enable. This path is a preference setting.

I believe I didn't see this message until I did an update, though I can't remember if it occurred after using the Linpus updater or the 'yum' command. Normally the command 'sudo' causes a log entry, of the command that was issued, to be written to the '/var/log/secure' file. Being that most AA1 owners and users don't need audit trail type logging (as in logging who did what for regulatory compliance) it should be harmless.

    Hello yodersj,
I typed su -, it prompted password request, so far so good.. and i typed
    [user@localhost ~]$ su -
    Password:
    [root@localhost ~]# mv all-20071007/* ls/usr/libs/codecs/
mv: cannot stat `all-20071007/*': No such file or directory
    [root@localhost ~]#

How come it says no file or directory when the files is there already and during the first command tar xvfj Downloads/all-20071007.tar.bz2, eveything okay? Gosh, it's harder than XP..

From what you pasted it looks like you didn't extract the files after running 'su -'. That makes me think you ran the 'tar xvzf ...' command while you were a regular user and that the tar file you downloaded was saved to that regular user's home directory. When you 'su -' you become root (aka Administrator) entirely and the working path becomes the root user's home directory. Hence the move command can't find the extracted directory as 1) you are now in a different directory and 2) you did not give the move command the full path to where the what you wanted to move actually exists.

Tip: Use the following command to check what the current directory is:
    Code:
    pwd
Try it before running 'su -', with 'sudo' in the front, and after running 'su -'. If you look at your command prompt it often gives a little bit of a clue as to what the current user and directory is.

When using the 'sudo' command, you only become root temporarily and the working path does not change. 'Sudo' is "super user do" while 'su' is "switch user". None of this is really that different than Windows XP if you were using the DOS shell, though most Windows users tend to run as Administrator all the time. Linux instructions tend to lean more toward using the command line because the GUI could be different.

I have the exactely same problem and cannot understand how to come around the problem in the terminal window. Despite your explanations.

    But:
I have all the files extracted in a directory and have found the usr/lib/codecs directory, but I cannot drag them to this directory. Can you help me with this I believe my Mplayer will function again.
