Well, I've talked to many of the people working at the Acer booth. Don't know whether you consider that as an Acer representative, but their answers weren't very consistent. One of them told me the new colors will be out in the middle of August. Another one told me I had to wait until the end of August. And then another guy told me I have to wait until the end of the year. So in other words, the people who work there don't even know themselves. It was a real disappointment for me, I was really looking forward to the brown one.

White was available but in very short supply, thus most had to resort to blue, which seems to collect hand smudge, grease and fingerprint. Did not inquire about other colors and availability.

About battery life I did an unsomewhat unscientific test. Battery had 60some percent, and started a McAfee scan, which took it only downto 30%, and the drive was really churning most of the time (for most of the 1-2 hours I was awake to notice). This is actually surprisingly larger than the Eee1000H I got, which came with a supposedly larger capacity battery.

HD is definitely slower than your typical desktop/laptp drives. Perhaps it was going on power saving mode (0r on battery power) thus going slower or what. Definitely don't try scanning or partitioning on battery power.

Comparing the two (A1 and 1000H) A1's keyboard is definitely a smidge narrower but most should be able to type bringing yoeur fingers closer. Battery life and running temp are just amazing, now I am confident it will run me 5-6 hours during regular typing, emailing, etc..

One minor annoyance perhaps I need to configure somewhere. When A1 wakes up from standby mode, I need to repair (through Win) the wireless network. Something I haven't need to do with Vista laptops (or previous xP laptops). Same thing is happening with the Eee1000H, but that wouldn't even repair, need to restart Windows.

If, and its a big if, they can source the parts, especially the Atom processor, I'd say it's possible, just. Let's compare notes at Christmas...

They were actually planning to ship 5-7 million units, but due to shipping delays, they scaled it down to 5-6 units. I think it depends on the other manufacturers who join the netbook race. So far Acer is doing very well in Taiwan. I'm not too sure about anywhere else.

Honestly its too early to tell. Its a desirable product, but it needs to get out in the wild in sufficient numbers for the "my sister saw mine and now she wants one" effect to properly take hold before the 7 digit sales figures start being posted ... if indeed they ever will be.

Its still too early to tell whether netbooks will, in the cold glare of the morning afer, live up to the hype.

I think they will, because I believe that the applications: both the software and what people actually do with the machine, will develop to match the form factor. In other words people will use netbooks in ways we dont fully appreciate yet. Having an OS that is designed for the screen, like Ubuntu Netbook Remix, will have a big impact - but I think that's just the tip of the iceberg. The 3G tieup will be an important development, for example.

However, maybe in 6-12 months netbooks become superceeded by low cost touch screen iPhone/MID type devices. Netbooks could be just an anomalous historical blip, another next-big-thing-that-wasnt.

i think Netbooks will be successful. I chose the AA1 over itouch as I cannot browse properly with it. nor run office, skype, do coding, do project, etc. I know they are not on the same league but if i happen to carry only one gadget in a given time, i would definitely choose a netbook. :)

Okay, I just downloaded Google Earth and tried it on this machine. It really works like a charm. When you first run it though, it says the recommended resolution is 1024x768 which is not supported by the One, but I really don't see any difference. Also, it's very convenient to use only the keyboard to browse around the map, because Acer brilliantly placed the page up and page down buttons on top of the left and right arrow keys which function as zoom in and zoom out.
