Well guess they didn't fix it by sep 2008. i'll bet there are some non-deaf mic aa1s that have september xp os dates, so maybe the date doesn't matter.

In the close but no cigar category, if you look at the Realtek driver properties it looks like there is a choice of line input. Go to device magr, sound video and game controllers, realtek,,line input devices, realtek hd audio, where you have a choice of using line input or not. Well this sounds like the missing choice, but when I said no to line input and rebooted, my sound recorder wouldn't work. Apparently line input does not meant external line, vrs built in mic. If someone with working mic could check this to verify they also have line input selected we would know for sure this has nothing to do with deaf mic.

I wonder if we are supposed to have the mic drivers posted for the vista installation. Transfrmr was pretty thorough in his listing of drivers, and identified one for the mic (I couldn't find it when I searched my xp version. I wonder what the mic driver is in xp, and how you go about finding it?

After a quick Google for "alc268 microphone not working" it would seem that it is perhaps not just an Aspire One problem, or a Windows XP problem.

There seems to be a multitude of other machines and OS where the built in mic does not work on the Realtek ALC268.

I agree it's more of a Realtek problem than an aa1 problem. Also the problem seems to be most prevalent with xp and linux. If vista solves the problem then it seems it was an os/Realtek problem. How many of you vista users have deaf mic. My xp aa1 deaf mic worked 3 separate times but I don''t know what I did to make it work, and it stopped working on the next power up. When it works it seems to be a very good mic, and I noted no intermittent operation which indicated the mic hardware was fine. Once I even set a system restore point after the mic started working. Next day when the mic stopped I restored the syatem and the mic started again, but that was the only time restore fixed the mic. What does the fact that I can only fix it once with system restore mean?

I googled "windows xp realtek microphone problems" and found quite a few hits. Lots of larger Acers and other pcs were having deaf internal mics with Realtek. Quite a few of these threads found a solution, but their software was not the same as ours. I'll bet there is some simple combination of steps requiring OKs or Apply from us that switches Realtec to internal mic. It is not obvious what these steps are. Also those with working mics report that they can add and remove software and their mic still works. This seems to say the software is more robust on these systems but why? Are the xp os versions newer? I looked at a Costco aa1 mic working and the Realtek driver was the same as mine, so does this mean the xp was different?

By the way deaf mic would normally be driving me crazy, but I found when my mic was working the sound with skype was a little distant and the mic picked up room sounds as well as my voice. This is not saying there is anything wrong with the mic, but you are not going to have your mouth 3 inches away from the bezel, so your voice will probably always sound better with a headset or just a separate mic (my solution) that you hold closer to your mouth. Still I would like to get my mic working.

Do you still have deaf mic? It seems the latest theory is that the problem is an xp/realtek interface problem. Apparently not very many vista (and by extension w7?) users have the problem. I'll bet the newer xp installs have cleaned up the problem but don't know how new they have to be. Can check your xp install date by c:, sys info, os. Mine is 7/16/08.

Right now I plan to solve with an external mic and maybe later a bluetooth headset. It still bothers me that the internal mic doesn't work, however. There are new (about a week old) drivers on the acer euro site ver 5.10.0.5772. I tried but they didn't work for me. I can't help thinking there is some subtle removal and installation trick that needs to be done which I'm not doing.

Deaf mic seems to be fixed with Skype 4 and realtek driver 2.16 :D
Might want to try this out if you are still having internal mic problems.

Nope, it didn't work for me. I have now tried 5 or more different drivers and still the internal mic is deaf. That's why I have a blue tooth earpiece and blue tooth adapter. I can sometimes start the sound recorder and tap around the screen and it will pick up that, but no voice. Even that works very sparingly.

The 1.78 drivers was the only set I could get to work with skype 3.8. Upgraded to skype 4 and then decided to try the new realtek drivers. Everything works, even after multiple reboots. Just tried sound recorder and it worked fine. Really is a weird problem.

The latest XP drivers from the Acer Europe support site work for me, at least with Windows Live Messenger 2009 and Sound Recorder.

Don't know if it makes any difference but I ran the Realtek mic calibration utility (miccal.exe) after installation. Full calibration does not appear to be possible but auto-gain does appear to work in both the Calibration utility and Windows Live Messenger 2009 (see the gain is automatically reduced when you shout).

Quality is still not great, especially on video calls, but that might be a bandwidth/lag issue on my broadband connection.

Switched to Vista and had the same deaf mic problem. Switched to realtek vista 1.78 and everything works fine. Now I switched to the new 2.20 driver and everything is working still. Something people might want to try is downloading the latest directx and then install realtek drivers. With 2.20 had to boost mic all the way up.

I just wanted to bump this up. My AOA150 has had awful, noisy sound (completely unusable, in fact) from the mic and the mic input since the day I got it. I just went and downloaded the Realtek V1.78 drivers and installed them, and now everything is great--the mic in is quieter than any of my previous laptops, even! The driver's up to V2.30, but since people at the start of this thread had such good luck with 1.78, that's what I decided to use.

    Hi everyone,

I just tested the internal mic with Skype 3.8 on my AOA-150 and the sound quality is terrible!
My voice sounds muffled, like a soft filter has been applied.
Using an external mic doesn't fair much better.

I'm just wondering how your microphone quality is with the Realtek 1.78 drivers.

I'm currently using the latest drivers (v5.10.0.5772) from the Acer site.

I've read that the poor quality could be due to the fact that I'm using a Wi-fi connection when using Skype, but the other people on the call sound fine...

    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

    Thanks for reading.
