I have done all of the above. It was stable for 3 days so I set it up as a dual boot with Vista and Win 7. Slooooow.
Locked up last night and unable to boot either partition. If it stays running I will set back to as delivered.
Back to Walmart. Will try the Lenovo S12 next.

edit: Acer doesn't care. No help there.

Windows Vista SP2 with all updates installed and the hardware drivers and still freezing. With Windows XP is more stable. I will open a service request at Acer.
    Thanks

After turning off the graphic accelerator, how do you get your screen to look normal again? I turned to max resolution and it is all way too wide...

After getting the computer to Acer, do they fix or replace it? does it help?
is it just some defected unites or pretty much every computer?

    Thanks

Windows 7, all drivers updated, bios updated to 3210, and it still freezes...
I just opened a report to Acer Italy, they told me they'd get back to me by tomorrow evening.

    Janduir10,

Microsoft does have an official Windows Vista Support Forum located here http://tinyurl.com/d5r9v3. It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. You may want to check the threads available there for additional assistance and feedback.

OK, I have tediously skimmed over the 23 pages thus far and I have a theory. I have only had 2 freezes in a week so I'm lucky I think...

Anyhow, I think the issue may be RAM related, namely RAM speed and the ability of the ram to be throttled back to 533mhz if its quicker such as 667mhz & 800mhz.

People have reported not all quicker RAM will work with certain netbooks, even though the acer literature states it will work.

I honestly believe different RAM copes differently with the slower speed.

If my 751 continues to freeze or gets worse, I will buy a 533mhz stick just to eliminate or validate this theory.

it will not solv the problem because the 667 and 800 mhz ram automaticly slow down to 533 mhz

Well that's my point. I don't believe all faster ram handle being slowed. Some ram won't even work at all.

    Really? It isn't all backwards-compatible?

Also, what speed is the RAM in the 751?

Isn't only one of the SODIMMs accessible? I think that the other is soldered onto the MoBo.....or am I wrong?

I've also noticed that the freezes seem to happen VERY OFTEN when the mouse pointer is crossing over a scrollbar. This has made me think that the touchpad driver is part of the problem. I'm now running with the generic Microsoft PS/2 mouse driver instead of the real touchpad driver. So far, no freezes (just one day, but with a lot of activity, video, etc.) Anyone else tried this?

Be patient -- it will freeze eventually. I've completely disabled the touchpad and use a mouse exclusively but continue to have lock ups with about the same frequency. I also first noticed the lockups while scrolling but with the mouse it freezes more randomly. I have noticed that the CPU throttles its speed up and down A LOT and this might be the root of the problem.

Yes, RAM has one slot. It will take 533 667 and 800 megahertz SODIMMs.

No matter what RAM you use it will only operate at the lower speed of 533.

My theory is that not all 667 and 800 megahertz RAM are stable at lower speeds. I know AAO and HP (and I imagine other netbook forums) have people complaining about some RAM won't even work at all on some netbooks.

If it is the RAM speed, then that would explain why it so random for so many people...

Anyhow, its only a theory and I don't suffer (yet anyway) from regular freezes, but if I do I will obtain a 533 stick and test it.

I have swapped out the Transcend RAM with a generic stick I had spare (both 800mhz 2gb) and have not suffered any freezes yet. But I know I'd have to go a week without a freeze to prove anything.

To fuel up under your theory, I can tell you that for several days now my netbook has been worse than ever. It would freeze at idle, almost imediately when trying to run Yahoo webcam, and every time I tried to copy a 4.37GB media file from a USB stick to the HD. I had given up trying to transfer the file.

I bought my machine with a Kingston 2GB RAM upgrade but I also got to keep the original 1GB.

I have also run several RAM test before without any problems so I have always assumed the RAM is ok.

I just put back the original 1GB and now I could transfer the mediafile without problems and have been running Yahoo webcam for over an hour so far.
Now, it will take a few days to see if this really helped or just a random period of functioning as so many times before.

I keep my fingers crossed :|

UPDATE: Several hours running webcam and everything else I can think of to make it freeze. Still going strong. I just reverted DEP and still standing. Looks promising. :)

On the Samsung NC20, when I had that, it had some of the same freezes, but then it was caused by the VIA GPU driver (latest one). Anyone tried to uninstall the Intel GMA driver, and see if that could be the problem?

I just got this netbook, have had 2 freezes in 2 days, one I froze when I did not use the computer for just a few seconds, with the screen on, the only thing I could do was to turn on/off bluetooth (probably also WIFI but did not try).

Other freeze was today, playing a small game Monopoly from RealArcade, this time the screen just went black, and same as above nothing worked, in both cases I had to turn off the computer manually.

Hoping it is the RAM, or maybe driver issue, really like this netbook, perfect for my needs, and don't want take it back to the store, or exchange it to a new, the chance is that the same issue is with all, and I could even get one that is worse, I mean 1 freeze a day is not bad, I use the netbook allot.

BTW Running Windows 7 RTM Ultimate on here, with latest drivers and latest bios.

I think it would be interesting to see what types/makes of RAM we are running. And specially those who never had a freeze. I got a real good feeling that my 751 finally became stable now.

    Kingston KVR667D2S5/2G - 2GB PC2-5300 CL5 200-pin SODIMM - Bought together with the 751 - Frequent freezing

    Nanya NT1GT64UH8D0FN-3C - 1GB 2Rx16 PC2-5300S-555-13-A2 667 - OEM-supplied - So far so good

Maybe it is the ram that is getting hot, at least on my 751 the ram compartment is completely coveret, even thugh there is made holes in the door, it is covered from the inside, an the ram compartment of the netbook is getting pretty hot, maybe the internal fan is blowing hot air to the ram?

The heat issue has been discussed and from my own experience, my 751 could freeze after a few seconds starting up cold. No chance of RAM or anything else getting hot. I have also had it very hot, resting on the bed with restricted air circulation, and not had any problems. Others report similar experiences so I think we can look away from heat issues.

Yeah there are no holes in the cover, just looks that way.

My unit was freezing a couple of times a day, in spite of trying the various updates and fixes on this thread. So I went in another direction - I started rolling back drivers to substantially earlier versions, and then updating them to the latest version when the computer froze again.

Here's the one that worked for me: rolling back the Realtek audio drivers to v. 6.0.1.5628 (May 2008). I haven't had a freeze for 18 days, avg. uptime 9 hours per day.

OK, so it may not be a heat issue, but for those interested, the inside of the cover is covered in thin plastic and can be removed...
