Netbook freezes randomly

Same here. Busting to see how you go. Also don't forget to give Prime95 a good go of course.

Mine in the meantime keeps happily freezing - totally randomly, and totally frustrating.

 

Have had Prime running for nearly 12 hours without issue.
Just started a skype call about 5 minutes ago between this and another laptop in my premises.

Will leave it all running overnight

Skype call ran for 3 hours + last night before disconnecting
Prime is still running - 24hrs now
I've also opened a sizable word document and performed some scrolling with all this going on and also did the same in Firefox

I've left another skype call active currently with Prime humming away also

Anyone with issues want to run CPU-Z on their netbook and upload the Z520 CPU stats for comparison?

I am sorry to hear people are still having issues. I just wanted to post a couple of things mentioned in the past few pages:

- my laptop was also purchased via catchoftheday.com.au Dec 2009
- my Acer case was HD-496-190510 if that helps anyone
- I have not had a single lockup in the three months since the motherboard and cpu replacement
- I use my laptop 5 days a week, winxp, firefox, google chrome, winamp, itunes, openoffice and sometimes ubuntu
- the repair docket only stated the motherboard was replaced. I ran a 'system information for windows' report before and after to confirm the cpu was replaced

 

Came back and the skype call was still running!
I just stopped it, duration of 10:43:35

Prime95 shows red and the following:

Comms, what audio driver version are you running?

Well, that does not sound too good at all, does it? Mind you, that does not mean that your system is still susceptible to those freezes, but it does mean that under heavy load it makes 'calculation errors'. If they lead to problems is another question.

Give it a good workout if you can over the next few days and let us know whether it keeps performing without problems. It will be interesting to see.

In the meantime I have contacted Acer's customer service today and I was promised a senior technician would look at my machine. Sound familiar, comms? Off it goes back home for the third time.

 

Happy to report still no freezing. Your case sounds very familiar, perhaps email them and ask that they provide details of repair before they return it to ensure your satisfaction.

With my second return case, they returned it to me with an updated audio driver, saying otherwise no fault found.

I'm not overly concerned by the Prime95 error. It just goes to show that an error can occur at some point with most technology and the netbook being consumer grade I'm OK with an error after 25 hours of intense CPU calculations. Previously I ran it for 30 hours error free, but my machine still froze under seemingly normal conditions.

I'm considering giving the laptop away shortly now I believe it's operating correctly and buy myself a Asus 1201PN HD Netbook, COTD has them currently for $558.95 delivered.

I took your path and called Customer Support at Acer as mentioned. Its amazing how different the tone of customer service is to the helpdesk. One sees you as a customer who needs to be helped out and assisted, the other kind of gives you the impression that you are more of a nuisance than anything else, especially when you have the same problem over and over again - which is to me at least partially understandable.

This is the driver I was talking about earlier. As soon as I ran this one (and not the "more up to date one" from Acer's driver download page) my Skype problems were solved.

I agree. We have not established a connection between the Prime95 errors and the freezes. As long as your machine does not freeze and is stable otherwise, I guess that is all you can ask for.

 

hello hello again afet along time!!!
i have post here bevore for problems about freezing problems and i ahave done some test's like the (IRQ8Priotity) in the registry,that have work for me in win xp sp3.
now.
i have make a claen install of win7 home premium but this tweak in registry has not work (IRQ8Priotity).
i dont't have upgrade any hardware anything is stock no changes at all. 1gb ram. 160gb hdd etc.
looking around the net no solution.and than a friend tolt me to play around with the SETFSB it may ''rerair's'' some little problem between ram an cpu something like that.
i done this bevore a week and now i am VEEEEEERY HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!no freezes aat all.the netbook works now over 6days nonstop and is not FREEZING.
if you like do make a test do it!!!that work for me. SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH I HOPE YOU UNDERSTAND ME

Comms, thanks for asking. Yes, it is back, the problem only is that I am overseas until the 18th and hence have not been able to even open the box. Will of course report back.

hi guys, newbie here...

where can i get a prime95 tester???

i bought my ao751 from the philippines in december 2009, and less than o month later, i had to bring it back to acer philippines for repairs because it often froze... got it a week later but i had to fly to australia after the day i got it... the service report says that they just upgraded the bios...

since january after i got it til now, the problem has recurred, but didn't send it back for repairs because 1) i wasn't aware of the ITW; 2) i didn't have the receipt with me; 3) i can't NOT have the computer for school work so i lived with it...

til last week when it almost always froze in a few minutes...

so i brought it to acer sydney, and three days later, got it back...

service report says
"Update bios. We have conducted a series of intensive test over a period of 2+ hours and your unit tested ok. Your unit didn't need to be restored to factory settings"

so they upgraded the bios again and i've run it on for about 5 hours straight while i was in the library and now for about 3hours now, no freeze yet... but i haven't really used it that much except for a 5min skype call...

i want to stress test it the way you guys do...

help???

Well, as I said, I have not been able to even open the box yet because I am half way around the world. I have been told though that it has been delievered and is waiting for me.

i've been running the torture test for more than 7 hours now and it is still going...

this is my third go at it, the first two lasting only for a few minutes, less than 20minutes cause i've been stopping the test because i wasn't sure i was doing it right.... it had one issue on the second run at 18minutes that said Hardware Failure at worker 2. worker 2 stopped working, but worker 1 kept going, but i stopped the whole thing and started over...

now it's still going... i hope acer got it right this time and i am hoping it is still really just a bios issue...

i'm gonna wait for as much as i could before i stop it again...

by the way, i removed the battery before i started, so i'm running off the charger... would this make a difference???

i'm asking because seriously, when i saw that they just updated the bios, then i am expecting it to start freezing again in a few days...

oh well... more than 8 hours now and it's still going... though i'm expecting it to freeze some time, i am really hoping that acer got it right this time...

Put it through some common triggers listed here:
Use the circular scrolling feature of the touchpad in MS Word and browsers.
Run a Skype call.
