Has anyone tried this? What were the results? Were there any driver problems?
Yeah i've got the Netbook remix installed, as well as the config package for the atom, and everything works fine. Maximus just got an update yesterday (the maximize applet) which help things a touch. As long as you disable visual themes you shouldn't have a problem (visual themes seemed to conflict with the launcher desktop, didn't know which to put on top, taskbar or launcher. I haven't got mine set up exactly like the pictures out on the web, got a different coloured taskbar (some applets wouldn't go brown) hope that helps i'll upload a screenshot at a later time when i get home
That's everything including the things we're having trouble with under 8.04.1 (Hardy Heron), i.e. wifi, sound and the SD-card readers ?
I look forward to the download link and pictures please. I assume this is still in beta? If you have time, perhaps an install guide would be handy to?
Um, wifi took a lot of hunting around, but that was for hardy, not the netbook remix. Note that the Ubuntu Netbook Remix IS ubuntu hardy heron 8.04.1, just with a couple of programs installed over the top, so if you sort out these problems it's irrelevant weather UNR is installed or not. Quick install guide: First this is installed on top of Ubuntu Hardy heron, You can't try and install it over Fedora. 1. Click System->Administration->Software Sources. 2. Enter your admin password. 3. Click "Third-Party Software Tab", then click the "+ Add..." button in the bottom left. 4. copy and paste the following lines, one at a time: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/netbook-remix-team/ubuntu hardy main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/netbook-remix-team/ubuntu hardy main 5. After you have added these two sources, click Close. 6. Back on your top panel, click Application->Add/Remove. 7. Search for each of the following programs individually, and when all are selected for installation, click "Apply Changes". go-home-applet, window-picker-applet, maximus, human-netbook-theme, and ume-launcher. 8. To make it look a bit more like the screenshots, delete bottom panel. 9. Select "Human Netbook Theme" in System -> Preferences->Apperance. 10. Whilst in Appearance Preferences, click the "Visual Effects" tab and select none. 11. In System->Preferences->Sessions, click "+add" and type "maximus" in the name section, then click ok. Restart your machine and you're using the Netbook Remix interface!
i've uploaded a demo on youtube. search for "ubuntu netbook remix and acer aspire one". It's nice, though at the Log In Settings, there are tabs that you won't be able to see the bottom part as the screen is too small and there's no way to configure the options properly.
Thanks for the video, it looks great. Much snappier than Linpus (visual effects, Firefox opening instantly(!), Open Office v2.4, etc...) You think it could work with Linux Mint? (Based on Xubuntu 8.04-it should...)
i haven't tried installing xubuntu first then netbook, though i think you'll end up having an ubuntu installed after you update your xub since the netbook greatly depends on gnome desktop. it would be great if they make a lighter xubuntu netbook remix.
On the point about not being able to see all the options due to screen size, do you know that in Ubuntu you can move a window by alt-clicking anywhere on it so you can drag windows upwards to see the buttons if they are off the bottom of the screen. This is very useful with small screens like on the One.
Excellent video! It looks even better than I expected it to be. The interface is very very intuitive and looks really good, too. The initial boot will surely be lessened in the future as the community will start to tweak the settings (maybe someone will even recompile the kernel).
Eeebuntu have released an .iso with the NBR launcher pre-installed. They also supply a script to make a bootable USB to install from. http://www.eeebuntu.org/index.php?optio ... &Itemid=31
