This may be pretty basic to most of you, but how do I get Mandriva to recognise my networked printer?

Generally speaking Mandriva should find networked printers for itself provided they are visible on the network. Open the Mandriva control centre (Menu -> Tools -> System tools -> Configure your computer) and select the hardware tab. Scroll down to the "Setup the printers ... " icon and click it.

Click on "New" and Mandriva should search for locally or remotely connected printers. If it doesn't find any, you will be presented with a dialogue which will enable you to enter details of the type and connection protocol of your printer.

For example, if you have printer connected to port 9100 of a print server with the IP address of 192.168.1.50, you could select the AppSocket/HP JetDirect option and enter the IP address and port number there. Or, if you have a printer shared on a Windows system using Samba, select the Samba option and enter the name of the host and the printer share.

You will also need to select the appropriate driver for your printer, and with luck this will already be installed and then you should be ready to go (Mandriva has loads of drivers either preinstalled, on the installation disk, or available to download.)

If you've done all this and still can't get any action, post back.

Many thanks for the reply. The problem is that under the hardware options there are no printers listed: only a scanner and a fax setup. Thus there is no setup printers icon to click!

A further search reveals that unless a printer is plugged in during installation, the printers option doesn't appear. You have to install system-config-printer with the package manager, and then follow the steps in the previous post. Simple when you know how!

Cripes. I didn't realize that. Someone ought to file a bug report. That's definitely not what you would call a feature. And it certainly wasn't like that in the previous release.

Doesn't seem to install printers by default-probbly because non detected on install. You have to install these yourself- least that my experience

    Go to system>administration>install&remove software
    Search for printers
there are a range of printer utilities etc there.
