My 8GB SSD version of the AAO is arriving today. I just found out yesterday that I can get the XP HDD version for $20 more.
I don't plan on doing any heavy mods to the thing, maybe a Ubuntu Remix install, but after reading all of the reviews of the slow SSD performance, I am a little leery of it now...

Should I return the un-opened SSD model and get the HDD version?

    Thoughts / Experiences?

I had the same quandary. I just bought the SSD/Linux version at Circuit City and found out that a Micro Center in Fairfax, VA had the Windows XP version. Now mind you, I love this linux version, the almost instant-on capability, the compatibility with Office, and the simplicity of the interface.

But, the lure of 1GB RAM and 120 GB hard drive is tempting. And then I went upstairs to look at my 3 year old Compaq laptop with a 1.6GHz processor, an 80 GB drive, 1GB RAM and Windows XP SP 3. And, well, I realized the amount of junk I had loaded on it just to protect against viruses and other evil. And I figured that I'm not missing much.

If you want more space and more RAM, the other version is a great purchase. I've had no problems with the SDD card and I've added a high-speed 4GB SD card to increase memory as well as buying an 8GB USB drive just in case. However, I can say that the more I use this SDD version, the happier I am.

    Good luck!

It all comes down to a matter of choice.
I am very likely to replace this 8gb unit when the wimax/3g units are available (end of year), but this One has already saved me money (see below).
I have the SSD version (I added 1gb of ram), I have a 16gb SDHC card in the left slot and far too many pendrives (about twenty) 2gb, 4gb and mainly 8gb units. I run a few different usb bootable systems :)

We all get a choice, I made mine and it was a good one.

Also see my post about the One saving me money.

well i opened it. posting from it right now.

keyboard is great. SO much better than the Eee 90x Series.
    screen very clear and bright.
track pad surface is a little odd, but i think i'll get used to it.

the fan is a little noisy at times, but other than that, no negatives.

Can't wait to try out Ubuntu Remix on this thing.
