Hi and sorry for this being my 1'st post however..

I just drove 70 miles to buy my aspire on sale... Got home and switched on but the process stalls and i end up with a black screen with an x (mouse pointer)

Machine is Aspire One , 1GB Ram, 120 HDD Linpus version.

    Process goes..

    1. Machine power up
    2. Bios setting option F2/F12
    3. Blue screen with Aspire logo
    4. Black screen with X (pointer x)

Any ideas folks before i attempt this drive back to the store for a refund?

I have copied the recovery cd to usb and changed the boot priority for my usb stick and restarted but the same process failure occurs.

    Cheers.

You may try to charge up the battery...

    Hi bte72,

melhiore`s suggestion is valid as it could be many problems including a corrupted Bios.
Personally as it is new I would take it back and get an exchange unit. Or if you want to try flashing the Bios but this would render the guarantee null and void I believe. :(

    Sound..

    Every comment is welcome..

I wont get the chance to get to the store for another couple of weeks so i am going to try and sort it out my self firstly.

I'm going to create a bootable usb copy of the recovery files .iso which i am downloading at the moment and see how i get on, then i'll contact acer in the morning if i have no joy .

    Ta,

    Problem sorted..

Cause unknown other than an operating system problem,

The following actions corrected the black screen

Attach external cd/dvd drive with Recovery cd
Attach usb stick to the left side usb port ( this is the only one that worked for me)
    Switch on netbook
    F12 - Boot from CD/DVD Drive
Create recovery USB from menu options
    Reboot
F12 - Boot from USB stick
Follow on screen instructions to end (fairly basic)
When finished recovery remove external disks when prompted
    Reboot from HDD/SSD
    Bob's your uncle..

If anyone needs the exact proceedure i can send it to them... From Acer support

If you would, please send me the procedures you used to get your Acer back on line. I tried to take iTunes off of mine and it went blank. I would like to use the procedures you did to see if I can bring it around. Thanks, Pete

i would also like the info please as i removed xfice to get Gnome and Banshee to work , they were removed and installed it said but my screen went black and i just have the search bar at the top right and the taskbar at the bottom , all i cn d now is use the internet but nothing on the machine , all my files are there i can find them but cant open anything as their now in grey not black type , all i get is error messages. if i could i would like to use another operating system other than linux lite as i miss the windows xp desktop im used to on my pc .When i bought the netbook I did manage to change it to firefox 3 add skype and the icon also plus vlc player hoping i dont have to do that again as i had real problems 1st time round.Dose anyone know if using the uban remix program will work and will it leave all my files in place , if i have to use anything from the old operating system to install it then im sunk . One last thing the alt f2 dosent do anything at all .The odd thing is that i was using the package manager and only did what it told me to resolve dependencies and conflictin programs , said xfce was conflicting with gnome so remove it and it did .How was i to know it would have this effect , there should be some sort of safeguard .Thanking you in advance . Dave

    Hi bte72,

I am pleased this has worked for you, I would also recommend creating a system image that you can always go back to if things get messed up.
I use Macles method here and it works a treat, the big bonus of using this method is that it restores your system but with all your extra added applications and software you may have loaded.

I create a new restore image once a month that I can always go back to. ;)
