I've just acquired an Acer Aspire One netbook, and have hit a small snag. When i hit "shift" with ' to get @, it doesn't shift, it just keys the '

    (I hope that makes sense.)

Is there a setting I need to tweak?

which shift key are you hitting, the right one? if so there may be something under the keyboard that makes the ' go down first. You can pry the keys up using your fingernails. Pry straight up from both sides and see if there is any thing under there.

If you are talking the left shift key then that is just weird ;)

Another thing, I know nothing of different languages on PC's but check that it is set to English.

    good luck.

It does it with both shift keys. someone on another forum suggested I hit "shift" & "2", and that worked a treat.

    Hi jdp1962

Sounds as though you have the keyboard set for English(US - International) and not English (UK).
Change it under Settings and then Keyboard.

I've hit a further snag with it.

I downloaded Avast anti-virus to the netbook, but when I tried to install it, it required an administrator's password. When I went into Settings menu to set one up, I discovered someone else already had, but as Idon't know what it is, I'm borked..

I got it cheap cos it was ex-display, end-of-line, but it looks like may have been bought & returned.

Well, it's gonna get returned again.

The store you got it from may know the password and then you could change it.
