Hi, I have an Acer Aspire One D250-0BQk and on switching it on it just shows my wallpaper image full screen and there is no taskbar, start button or desktop icons. Any ideas what I can do please? Cheers Alan.

Try CTRL+SHIFT+ESC that should bring up Task Manager. Look through the processes tab to see if Explorer.exe exists as a process, if not, you should be able to hit File -> New Task (Run) -> clear the box then type in "EXPLORER.EXE" minus the " marks and hit enter.

If Task Manager doesn't start, you might want to reboot into Safe Mode and see what you can find there.

If you can get to it, start regedit (the same was as mentioned above for explorer.exe) and look under HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon - check the settings for UserInit in the right panel. It should be pointing to c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,

I checked and explorer.exe wasn't listed on task manager so I entered it and hit enter but it didn't seem to get added to the list of processes. And I checked in regedit and what you put was already listed. Any further suggestions please?

Interesting problem. The top Google result seems sensible - I found explorer.exe in C:\Windows - if it's not there, or is somehow corrupted, replacing it could work if you have access to another Windows system and can copy the file to a thumb drive:

"Go to your friends computer and in Windows folder in the C:/ Drive. In that there will be 3 explorer types. Take your removable hard drive and copy the one with the Computer monitor as the icon. Go back to your computer and paste it in the same windows file. Then with task manager, open New Task... and type in explorer.exe and voila!!! it will work. If you have tried to do system restore, It will pop up saying that it has failed. Just press close. Done!!!!"

    Good luck.
