no sound

    can anybody help me out, as a complete linux newbie, i have lost my sound when on internet no tunes heard when cicking on the preview bits on amazon and there is no sound when on skype. but when i play my tunes that are on the computer it plays no probs.
    I have checked the sound settings and the blue colums are at the top. but i dont know how to check the default things that should be in settings. just plugged a set of portable speakers into earphone socket and i got sound not loud but hearable, does this mean that it is a socket problem?
