Hi All, i have a friends Aspire One here that she has managed to fill up the entire 8GB SSD. There is no room left for XP to boot to in theither normal or safe modes.
I have tried to run D2D to restore to factory but this fails. I cant get it to even start the restore process.

Could anyone please give me some advice on how to fix it... apart from smashing it with a hammer.

    Thanks in advance

    Darren

Your best bet is to boot a live linux distro to gain access to the files on the SSD and delete them as necessary. Another user posted about this same problem just a week or two ago.

If you just want to run a restore, then you'll need your Restore CD's and an external DVD-RW drive to boot them from. An 8Gb SSD has absolutely no room to spare for a recovery partition so D2D recovery is not really an option.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
the unit did not come with any cds or dvds. So can i assume there there is a system recovery partition? It is listed in the bios as an option but fails to run.

How do i boot a live linux distro?? Sorry Dont know much about linux.

    Thanks Darren

As I said in my previous post, there is no room on the standard 8Gb SSD's to accomodate a recovery partition. I don't know why the option was included in your BIOS.

However if your unit did not come with a restore CD I don't think you'll get very far with regards to recovering it back to factory settings. You'll pretty much have to use some other method of accessing the SSD to delete some junk that you don't need.

    You'll need the following:
    * An external USB DVD drive
    * A Live-Bootable Linux distro (you will find one on the cover of most computer magazines. Look at them in the store before you buy them, they should say something like "Contains Bootable Linux" or soemthing like that. Ubuntu is pretty much the most user friendly)

    Then:
    * Attach the USB DVD drive to the AAO and insert the bootable disk
    * Turn on the AAO and tap F2 to access the BIOS
    * In the BIOS, change the boot order to the external drive first, save settings and exit
    * The AAO should then boot from the disk, when it does, choose the "try" option which runs "live" off the disk without altering your HDD/SSD
    * Ubuntu should then load up to a desktop, from here you can gain access to the file system on your SSD and from there you can delete whatever files you need.

Try to clear up about 512Mb-1Gb of space, Windows should then boot. Just be careful what you delete.

I'm the guy this happened to a couple of weeks ago. I had to do some horsing around to get a USB flash stick set up but once that was done I could get into the machine and delete some stuff on the drive so that Windows could load. Don't dispair - you can take care of this. You'll be your family's hero.

Slightly OT, but related question: did any version of the AOA110 come with Windows?
