    Hi,

I'm a newbie to Linpus (Linux in general), but thanks to the directions found in this forum, I managed to download and install Skype without major difficulties. The problem I'm facing is that I don't get any video, nor can I see any camera symbol from people that I know have webcam and are on-line.

I'm used to the Skype interface with Mac/Win, under Linpus I don't have the usual menu options for settings/preferences. I downloaded Fedora 7 package.

Did I do anything wrong? How can I get the webcam up and running (webcam seems to be fine. I tested it with Webcam program under the "fun" section.

Thanks in advance for the help.

    Cheers,
    Joao

I have experienced the same problem.

Skype installs fine, works for voice calls and camera works in the options - video test window, but there is not option to turn on video during a call, even when video is enabled in the options page.

Is there anyone with more experience with Linux and Skype who can assist?

    Thanks.

I recently installed Skype using the procedure posted on the forums here, and I just gave it a nice long test with a friend. We ran video with no problem at all.

I don't have much experience with Skype so don't know what to suggest. The only thing I did in my setup is to go into options / video devices and set it to start video automatically. Don't know if that was required or not, though. I was able to turn video on and off during the call with no trouble.

Hope you get it figured out.

    I had video with Skype ... and I didn't ... sometimes works ... sometimes doesn't ....

I am not sure, but I think works better if Messenger is not running ....

Receiving video works always perfect, but sending it goes on and off .... not sure why

Thanks for te suggestions. I tried with a friend at his place, with my Aspire One and an Imac. As it turns out, on the Imac, it shows me with camera. But one the A1, I can see my friend online, but does not show any camera icon. Anyway, video conference worked fine. I set the A1 to have video on all the time.

Only tried it once, not sure if in the future I will have the same issues pointed out in some of the responses. It's a shame that Sightspeed has not yet made a Linux version, as it is superior to Skype. In my opinion nothing beats Ichat, but unfortunately, there is no netbook from Apple yet.

Of course one can try to install OS X on one of the netbooks, as explained in many other forums, but if wifi is not working without installation of a different card, it's too much trouble.

I had the same problem - I installed Skype without any issues, and had audio but no video. When I went to test my video in Options, it showed nothing, although I was able to confirm my camera worked using the webcam utility. Cruising the forums I came across this post http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2184&p=14631&hilit=gspca#p14631 which doesn't look too helpful at first. Then I remembered that on FC8 I had needed to install the GSPCA driver mentioned here to get my webcam to run in skype - so I tried installing GSPCA again and guess what - Skype video worked fine.

You can install them via the terminal window with:
    Code:
    sudo yum install gspca
You can omit 'sudo' if you are logged in as root. I don't know what repository it's part of - the only repo I added was livna - so if yum tells you that it doesn't know what you are talking about, you'll need to add the livna repo via the following:

    Code:
    sudo rpm -ivh [url]http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm[/url]
    sudo rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-livna
That's all I did - I may have rebooted, I don't remember. As always, if any more knowledgeable than I sees an error on my part, please feel free to point it.

Too late. The current version of gspca in livna depends on the 2.6.25.14-69.fc8 kernel, so yum tries to upgrade the poor linpus. Even '--disablerepo updates' won't work.

I seem to have the same problem as well, video is not working in skype.

Hmm, that's quite strange - I installed gspca last night on linpus without any issues, and just did an update on it and it said there was nothing to do. Maybe it wasn't in the livna repo; here's a list of the repos I have in /etc/yum.repos.d/

    fedora-development.repo
    fedora.repo
    feodra-updates.repo
    fedora-updates-testing.repo
    livna-devel.repo
    livna.repo
    livna-testing.repo
    skype.repo
