Hi, I've searched and read as many posts as I could understand on this problem. I've tried several of the 'fixes' that worked for others but I'm still without the ability to connect. Connect Manager will not start. The wifi icon never loads. I was online quite happily talking via Messenger to my daughter when the Aspire One suddenly went into standby because of low battery. When I got it back, there was no connectivity at all.

On another thread someone mentioned running wifi from the terminal with /usr/bin/nm-applet, when I tried this I got this Warning

** (nm-applet:13822): WARNING **: <WARN> applet_dvus_manager_start_service(): Could not acquire the NetworkManagerSettings service as it is already taken. Return: 3

I'm new to Linux and have no idea what this means or if this helps anyone to identify the problem. Any help at all would be gratefully received.

Thanks. I checked the auto hide, can't run nm-applet in terminal, tried the suggestion with
    " sudo gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /system/networking "
    " gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /system/networking

    and nothing happened.

    Also
    su -
    password
    mv .gconf .gconf.orig
    reboot

    No result

Let's see if network manager is in fact working in some form. In a teminal, do
    Code:
    ps ax | grep nm
and see what the output is.

Ok, let's see what happens if we terminate it and restart it. Again in the terminal:

    Code:
    kill -9 2214
    nm-applet
Don't close the terminal if it works - the application will die with the terminal if we're not careful.

    OK, let's try something else.
    Code:
    service NetWorkManager status
should tell you whether the Network Manager service is running; if it is it will specify a pid (mine says 'NetworkManager (pid 2585) is running'). Using the number given there, do
    Code:
    kill -9 [b][i]number[/i][/b]
    nm-applet
At this point I'm hoping for a different error message, at least!

    That's novel!

OK, we'll get rid of the pid file and try restarting the network manager. Still in terminal:

    Code:
    sudo rm /var/run/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.pid
    sudo service NetworkManager start
If youy don't get any disturbing message at this point, then try
    Code:
    nm-applet
and see if we're doing any better now!

    After sudo service NetworkManager start

    i got
    Setting network parameters...
    Starting NetworkManager daemon: [ok]

I thought this sounded unthreatening so I tried nm-applet

    and here we are again:

    * (nm-applet:13822): WARNING **: <WARN> applet_dvus_manager_start_service(): Could not acquire the NetworkManagerSettings service as it is already taken. Return: 3

This is not an easy one. One possibility is that something else is trying to connect to NetWork Manager by the time nm-applet does so. Could you send me (or post there) the whole of the output from

    Code:
    ps ax

So it looks as though nm-applet is already running, though it started before NetworkManager did. I assume you rebooted before providing that list. Since it's already going, I reckon it's probably what's grabbed the NetworkManager service, so that no new nm-applet can do so.

Try killing the nm-applet and the NetWorkManagerDispatcher processes (kill -9 <number> for each one - the number may be different if you've rebooted again) then do the service NetworkManager start and again try starting nm-applet.

This at least seems to be a *different* warning. Is that good or bad?
By the way, thank you for devoting so much effort to this. It's deeply appreciated.

Hang on, I've just seen what I did wrong myself.
    I missed out a killing.

    I'll do it again

    I rebooted and ran afresh.

    Second kill provoked this response:

bash: kill (2769) - Operation not permitted

(Would this (ps ax) list be of processes running on the computer at the time of asking? Sorry is it's a stupid question, I'm a complete beginner)

ps ax provide a list of all processes (ps), for all users (a), whetehr or not started from a terminal (x). Becasue it lists all processes for all users, you need to become root to kill some of them - you can usually only kill your own processes.

Try doing the second kill with 'sudo' before it.

    second kill worked with sudo

    ran NetworkManager start

** (nm-applet:6077): Warning **: Error in get_property: The name org.freedesktop.NetworkManager was not provided by any .service files

    (it says this twice)
