If you do ps ax again, is NetworkManagerDispatcher listed as well as NetworkManager? If it's not, start it with
    Code:
    sudo /etc/init.d/NetworkManagerDispatcher start

Now we seem to have nm-applet and NetworkManagerDispatcher running, but not NetworkManager itself! Try killing them all, then starting them in the order:
    Code:
    sudo service NetworkManager start
    sudo /etc/init.d/NetworkManagerDispatcher start
    sudo nm-applet

    Still:

I'm sorry: I can't see where else to go on this. All the googling I've done indicates that if NetworkManager and NetworkManagerDispatcher are both running, nm-applet should be able to run: when the error you quote is reported elsewhere, it's because one or other of those services isn't running.

    Anyone else any ideas?

Thank you very much for trying.

I ran another search and found this http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/...&p=32507&hilit=download+networkmanager#p32507

which I've used. Now I have some connectivity - it will connect via ethernet though the wifi baulks at the password stage, for some reason it won't accept the network security password.

However, the software updater has a whole list of stuff to update, three entries are for the Network Manager, but the updating keeps getting held up on dependency conflicts. It's an awfully long list. Does anyone know if there is another way of managing to just install a few things other than working my way all down the list and unticking everything except the ones I want?

In the end I slogged through the package updater list, unticking everything except the stuff I recognized and then installed the updates. AA1 now connects via wifi and lan.

    Thanks for the help.
