I have a mac and I've had this laptop for about 3 yrs now. I had windows as well but I feel a mac is better because it doesn't have viruses. I gave my windows laptop to my son and he don't even like it anymore due to viruses. My opinion is to go to best buy and ask the geek squad to tell you what will work for you.

Mizzperdue, that is awesome! I really wonder why Windows laptops are so infested with viruses! I had no idea this wasn't the case for MAC laptops! I really wonder why is that? This is a really good reason to buy a MAC :) To be honest I have never been a big fan of MAC laptops, but this alone (talking about the viruses here) is a good reason to start considering them!

I believe that Windows has the Market share of computers and as there is only ONE system inside ALL versions of Windows up to Windows 8.o
and Internet Explorer is also common in ALL versions of Windows...
it is fairly easy to build a virus that can attack Windows.

Mac Computers, have a totally different Operating System AND, as one of the Minority group are therefore LESS LIKELY to have people building viruses to clobber them - but the viruses are out there.

LINUX Yet another DIFFERENT Operating system, has HUNDREDS of variants... and to the best of my notice has so few Virus written for them; they can be counted on one Hand.

You want Virus - Free. GO LINUX... and it is $$$ FREE too.
try Linux Lite 1.0.8; it does EVERYTHING Windows does, and only takes around 5Gb of space on the Hard drive.

As Brian has said the reason why there are so few Virii for Macs is due to the low market volume that they have.
As Windows is the mainstream operating system it makes more sense for Virus writers to focus their efforts on Windows.

But as Macs are becoming more and more popular, combined with the myth that they are virus free, I can see more and more virii being created for them.

It doesn't matter what operating system you have, you can stay virus free by running an up to date anti-virus software (Personally I use Microsoft Security Essentials as it is free and regularly updated) and being careful about what you click on and what you download.
Any downloads you try and make which require you to download an exe file in order to download your file should be avoided for example.

Simple rule of thumb, if you are trying to download something that is free and shouldn't be, you'll probably get a virus. If you constantly follow links from unsolicited email then you're opening yourself up to a virus.
I'm not saying that you are doing either of the above as it is possible to get a virus from a site that looks very legitimate. But if you have a decent up to date virus scanner then it should stop the virus in its tracks.

I believe Mac also get infected by viruses they are not all immune to viruses. I think it is better to protect your Mac even if it is rarely affected by viruses, the day it will strike it might not be that pleasant.
