    Hi guys,
forgive my ignorance but I'm really struggling here... Just plugged in external hard drive, and I couldn't write to it, but could read. Having had this problem before I went in to the NTFS configuration tool from the System menu and tried to change settings to allow write. This didn't work. Restarted machine, and now getting the message
    Code:
mount: only root can mount /dev/sdb1 on /media/Philips External Hard Disk.
Thought I'd try a memory stick instead, same result. Now I can't even read. Badly need to back up my wee machine, it's full to bursting... can anyone please help!

You can be root, just prefix terminal line commands with sudo,
ie sudo mount /dev/disk "/home/My new Drive" [enter]
Also files owned by root can have their read permissions allowed for user with
    sudo chmod 777 thefilename [enter]
