Using Open Office Writer (2.3 as supplied), under Linpus, with the Font 'Liberation Serif'' and when I display nonprinting characters, instead of the standard dot (for space) and pilcrow (paragraph) characters, I get what I think are mathematical summation (capital Greek SIgma) and partial differential (bit like a reversed italic 6) characters symbols.

This appears to be specific to the Liberation Serif font: I get the normal character in other fonts (but haven't tried them all)

Has anybody else encountered the same problem?

Any ideas how I can get the standard symbols (with the Liberation Serif font)?
