If I were you, I would go for OpenOffice because it`s free!
The only reason why I use M$ Office 2003 is because it loads faster.

If you already have office 2007, go with office 2007.

BTW, office 2007 loads faster than office 2003 (portable version). The GUI is indefinetly better than both open office and office 2003.

    They are both good.

If you can get Office 2003 for cheap used or something go with Office 2003 instead because it's the standard for business and schools.

As for Office 2007 being faster than 2003, wrong! 2003 is much faster to load and takes less resources than 2007.

That's like saying Vista is faster and takes less resources than XP...

Vista is indeed running faster than windows XP on my desktop (mainly because of superfetch). It also more efficiently uses RAM and resource since it preloads 2GB of programs into the system ram.

As for office 2007 on AAO, it also starts up faster than office 2003, that's why i switched to the newer version. However, there's no doubt the office 2007 uses more resource than office 2007, in return office 2007 offers better UI and more functionality. Besides, AAO has plenty of unused resource which would otherwise be wasted.

I've got Office2003 but I'm not sure how to install it onto the Aspire as it's on CD. I've read things online which says it won't work if you copy it to a USB stick and copy across.

Um, do you have a desktop with CD/DVD drive?

If you do have access to a computer with CD/DVD drive use this program called MagicISO to create an ISO of Office 2003 CD:

    http://www.magiciso.com/

It's trial/shareware but fully functional. Create an ISO on the desktop computer and transfer the ISO to your Aspire One using a USB thumb drive, FTP or Messenger. Then you can either mount or extract the ISO on your Aspire One and install:

http://www.magiciso.com/tutorials/miso- ... istory.htm - virtual CD/DVD program for mounting the ISO file on your Aspire One. Once mounted on virtual CD/DVD use it like a real CD/DVD drive and install.

    or

http://www.7-zip.org/download.html - program that can extract the ISO file onto you Aspire One. Extract the ISO file like you would do with a ZIP file and install.

Both mounting and extracting methods will work, just as long as you've created the ISO file on the desktop and transferred the ISO to your Aspire One.

No bud, get you facts straight! XP is faster than Vista on computer with same specs. Vista is somewhat like the new ME that should have never been released. If you're talking about Windows 7 Beta than maybe but we'll have to wait for the final release to tell.

I tried both windows xp professional with SP3 and Windows vista ultimate with SP1. I tried both OS (not dual booting) without modification on the same system.
CPU: AMD phenom x4 9550 overclocked to 2.4ghz
    Ram: 4x1GB crucial DDR2800
    HDD: 1x160GB, 1x250GB, 1x500GB
Graphic card: onboard hd3200 (similar performance to Geforce 8400GS discrete graphic card).

Vista is actually faster than Windows XP. The application like Vmware, adobe photoshop..etc actually runs faster.

Windows 7 ultimate beta build 7000 runs faster than XP in Vmware (2GB of ram, 25GB virtual hdd space, 1.5GB of ram, etc).

If you have a desktop or a laptop with a DVD drive, why not share it with your Aspire One?
Share the drive, insert the disk and install it from your Aspire One. :D

I installed Office 03 on my "One" and it works fine. Get yourself a cheap external DVD. The one lised below is $48. There are several external drives on eBay and elsewhere. The good thing about the one below is that it's USB powered and about as portable as you can get with an external. The downside is that it's probably a little slower to operate than one with external power. While I haven't done a movie test, it would seem to be worth having one of these like the one below for movies while traveling. The bad thing about USB power is that it will draw down your battery quicker. I suspect a 6 cell battery would be mandatory for running a full movie.

    Back for an edit...

I just ran a movie with my USB external powered DVD player and it ran fine (no jumps). As far as I know, the only "player" presently on my "One" is MS Media Player and I couldn't get the movie to fill up the screen with the quick test I did, but it would certainly be watchable on a flight. The big question now is whether a USB powered from the "One" would run without jumping? If the answer is yes, I may have to consider getting one of these drives like the one below.
