I encountered a problem almost immediately. Having turned it on, I selected my language, entered a password and selected the date (which read back to front - but nevermind, I can live with that). When I selected Finish, the machine said it was going to reboot and not to turn it off. It rebooted and I looked at my desktop for the very first time. After about 30 secs it shutdown again, permanently. I switched it on again but it shut itself off after passing the F2 and F12 prompts. Switched on again and the pattern repeated itself - saw desktop for 30 seconds and then it would shut down - followed by the even less successful boot attempt.

Eventually, I managed to quickly access the password section of the settings section and change my password within the 30 secs. I changed it from the one which I had originally logged on with, to another. The first new one I tried was very similar to the first one and it informed me that it was "Bad" (something to do with being a dictionary word) - so I changed it to something completely different, which it accepted. I came to the conclusion that it was a blip due to my having used a "Bad" password at the outset. I have never been prompted for it since. I thought I would need it to log on but no.

The internet browser was a breeze and I managed to set up my email account after a bit of hassle. It refused to speak to my Brother DCP -110C though so figured I needed some drivers. I installed all the updates from the Live Update section of settings before downloading printer drivers from Acers official website. I think I managed to unzip them. Now when I try to configure it, I get the message "you are attempting to run "system config printer" which may benefit from administrative privileges, but more information is needed in order to do so. Authenticating as "root" - followed by password prompt.

I have read on these forums that it is my original password that is required (I think) and I get the impression that it may need "su" before it. I have tried every combination of both my first and my second password, with and without them being prefixed by "su" (is there a space between "su" and the password??) but I am getting nowhere.

I am new to Linux and I find anything relating to "root" and programming scary. Can anyone tell me if my initial password experience is causing me a problem. I have checked and the one I changed it to still works cause when I try to change it to something very similar - it tells me I can't because its too similar to the previous one. I am confident that I have remembered my first one correctly too - wrote it down.

    Thanks guys!
