Is it possible to reset the root password without knowing the original password.?I have been given an Acer Aspire running Linux Lite but I cannot install anything without the password which the original owner has no record of.
I wanted to install Skype which brings up another question. Skype gives a few versions of Linux to select for install, which version matches Linux Lite?

    Thank you in anticipation.

    Hi

    It is possible to reset the root password, see the following link;

    viewtopic.php?f=17&t=177&hilit=password

I think it is the third post.
You can also open Terminal by pressing the Alt and F2 keys together and then click run.

    Best wishes

    Hi,
Get skype and other stuff here...
    http://www.acer.com/aspireone/support/files/connect.html
Just unzip and click on the .sh file you willl be asked for your root passwd. For future ref Fedora 8 packages should be compatible but you may have to install dependent libraries or programs (dependencies) as well. This link is a pretty good source for these..
    http://rpm.pbone.net/
    Enjoy
    :)

Having downloaded and installed Skype as suggested, I find that it is text and voice only. Is this normal for this particular version or are there some additions somewhere to install?
Is there a handbook that covers Linux Lite somewhere?

    Thanks

Darryl thank for your advice. I have ordered the book so hopefully I can begin
finding my own answers. The video camera is working ok on the notebook but in
Skype it appears to be absent even when I go in and select it. The only icons available
on the page are audio and text. I obtained the notebook with Linux O/S for the purpose
of learning a bit about Linux without doing any damage to my own PC but I expected
a bit more info with it. Hopefully I may after consulting the book.
    Thank you

    ok,
The skype I'm actually using is the fedora 7 version. If you install this package you wont get an icon on the desktop but you can access it from the "right click" on the desktop if you have enabled advanced mode....
    open terminal and input
    Code:
    xfce-setting-show
click on the desktop icon and the behaviour tab (DONT hit the panel with the rat on it (common) or you'll end up with an unconfigured panel on the desktop that is a pain for a beginner to get rid of). Tick the box that says "show desktop menu on right click" then close all boxes. Now when you right click on the desktop there'll be lots to look at. DONT use the software updater from this menu its for full version fedora linux and it'll mess up your system.
    see this post for icon..

    Get the package here...

    Enjoy
