    Model ZG5 AOA150.
The wire coming from the AC adapter brick ,1-2 inches right before it terminates in the plug ,has a mysterious cylindrical bulging component. The best guess I can come up with is a diode. But it seems redundant in this setting. Please explain the purpose of this component.

Those cylindical "devices" are usually little more than a ring of what I think is carbon. Inside the cylinder, you'll find the two cores (positive and negative) coming from the AC brick will wrap around this ring once or twice before exiting the ring and tying into the actual adapter at the AAO end.

This ring is usually there to help decrease or eliminate any electro-magnetic and possibly radio-frequency interferance caused by the DC current flowing through the cable.

Hi, the cylindrical thing is called a ferrite ring. Its basically very fine iron dust mixed with a resin. You're correct about its use being to reduce electro magnetic noise.
